Lake Charles, Louisiana is a town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Lake Charles were Illiniwek Indians who lived near present-day Slidell and other Jacques Cartier sites during the 17th century. In 1699, French fur traders explored and charted the Mississippi River and its tributaries as they made their way to northeastern Louisiana and found suitable land for colonization. In 1764, France ceded control of what became Louisiana to Spain after defeats in two wars with British forces at San Jacinto and Baton Rouge. Spanish colonists began settling in what would become Lake Charles in the early 1800s, primarily because access to systems of navigation on the Mississippi River was invaluable for trade with Native American populations along both its banks. By 1803, most of what would become LakeCharles had been established when Captain John Ligon bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) northeast of present-day downtown from Indian trader Jean Lafitte on July 25 that year as part of a purchase that included all or part of Mobile Bayou (now Bayou Lacombe). In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Tupelo, Tennessee after defeating Redcoat troops at Battle Horseshoe Bend on November 8 that year in an event which helped solidify his reputation as a leader able to dispense justice quickly and decisively. On February 14, 1840–seven days before he was elected president—Jackson ordered Rear Admiral James Kenedy to take possession of Mobile Bayou so it could be used for naval purposes rather than being used by Native Americans for farming purposes or cattle pasturing as prescribed by treaty negotiators related to Treaty Novena (January 20, 1837). As a result, much valuable salt water cultural resources werevgained by Kenedy's action which helped spur economic development around Mobile Harbor during leadership Thomas Jefferson's presidency (1801-1809). The development of railroads in the late 19th century increased trade with other parts of America, making Lake Charles one of the most important railway cities in Louisiana. In addition to its role as a railroad junction, Lake Charles also became known for its production of cottonseed oil, which helped make it one of the leading cotton ports in America during this time period. During World War II, LakeCharles played an important role in the Allied war effort by providing munitions and military supplies to forces fighting on both sides of the conflict. In particular, ammunition shops located at various points within the city were used extensively during wartime to produce munitions such as artillery shells and torpedoes. After World War II ended, many downtown businesses closed down due to economic decline; however, some local businesses remained active until around 2000 when they too went out of business due to changes in technology or other factors. As a result of these changes, much evidence remains missing from what once characterized downtown LakeCharles - including many popular attractions such as banks and movie theaters - but has since been restored thanks to community donations and support from locals and visitors alike.
