The first permanent European settlers were Englishman who founded La Salle College in 1784 about two miles southeast of present day LakeCharles on land that would later become part of LaPlace Parish seat... In 1803, Catrina Moultrie married Captain John Byfield at a ceremony held at Fort Lafayette on Iberia River near modern day Baton Rouge... Byfield had come downriver with Commodore James Ketchikan's Expedition under Flag Officer Edward Preble to explore southern Alaska and northern Russia... Ketchikan's party reached Sitka Sound July 25th after crossing into Russian America June 30th.. They then sailed upriver until they arrived off Kodiak Island September 2nd where they anchored off Point Barrow October 3rd..... On November 5th they entered Kodiak Harbor whereupon Commodore Preble sent ashore his topographical engineer George Vancouver with orders to survey point Barrow.... On December 1st Captain Byfield sighted Cape PrinceofSalvationpoint(now cape Denali National Park) bearing Northeast 21 degrees latitude....... Commander John Franklin led an expedition consisting mostly men armed only with dogsleds across difficult terrain along Anna Strait January 14th 1804 including four days march over snow/icecovered ground Many accounts say that when US Explorers Dred Scott & Roebuck met Indian Chiefs Kennicott & Ottoway near present day Wasilla village northeast corner Of Yakutat Peninsula March 16 th 1805 these men fought a pitched battle leaving one man dead but after negotiations resultant Treaty Between US & Russia set aside Undivided Alaska Territory March 3d 1806 Russians took possession
