Lafayette is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Jefferson Parish. The population was 17,845 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The name "Lafayette" is French for "the boy who collected flowers." The climate here is typical Acadiana country with hot summers followed by cold winters with occasional rain or snow during periods when temperatures average about 40°F (-4°C). Highways 574 (I-10) Exit 13 provide access to all parts but eastern Livingston Parish so residents must leave their neighborhoods except for limited travel into town during daylight hours for shopping or other activities connected with production or transportation jobs in those parishes only - again something that varies greatly depending on local conditions - while exits 14 through 16 provide access only to southwestern Webster Parish so residents must leave their neighborhoods bordering that parish too
