In 1892, Lafayette's first regiment of artillery was organized and the city became its home. The Louisiana Volunteers were the first state militia to serve in World War I. In 1939, Lafayette acquired its own army unit when it became a consolidated city-state with an army. The following year, Lafayette also donated land for a military hospital. By 1945, the army had grown to over 4,000 soldiers and women in barracks throughout the city. In that year, General Dwight Eisenhower moved his headquarters from Europe to America's largest city as Ulysses S. Grant's successor as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces in Europe. As part of this eventful time period in American history, Lafayette also saw demonstrations against World War II mobilization policies by various groups including students and workers who convened at L'Enfant Plaza on July 10th 1944 to demand disarmament of America's atomic arsenal. After years of planning and funding by Mayor John Fitts and other civic leaders, construction began on Alcatraz Island military prison on October 1st 1946 for over 200 thousand inmates who would be held there during World War II between Japanese surrender until Japan's eventual capitulation two months later.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department was founded in 1834. The first sheriff, John A. Rankin, served one term. In 1892, the department became a part of the Louisiana State Police and was renamed the Louisiana State Troopers' Association. In 1960, it became an independent agency and was again renamed the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department.

Lafayette was established in 1812 as a trading post on the Iberville River by General Lafayette and Colonel John Belknap. The townsite passed through various names before its current name was chosen in 1836: Lafayette Village, after General Lafayette; Lafayette Heights, after the general's home on Mount Royal in France; and finally La Feuillade, named for French General Louis-Jacques de la Fayette. The city of New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne as a small village named Nantes on the west bank of the lower Mississippi River. In 1800, New Orleans became an Spanish colonial possession and was under French rule until it achieved its independence from Spain in 1799. In 1802, Lafayette became an American territory when it was ceded to France via Congressional Resolution No. 522 (28 May 1800). On 21 October 1803, President James Kenedy issued Executive Order No. 404 ordering all flags flown at half mast throughout the United States during Carnival to show respect for George Washington's Birthday with special attention to those of Napoleonic France since this day had been designated "La Victoire" (the victory). In 1861 they seceded from America and formed their own Confederate government which lasted until 1865 when they were forced back into America by Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant. After Reconstruction ended in 1895 following civil rights legislation enacted by Congress,[1] Lafayettes image degraded significantly with many businesses closing or moving away while African Americans continued to experience economic discrimination throughout most of Louisiana despite some progress made since Reconstruction ended.[2][3] However some resurgence has occurred over recent years with local organizations such as La Feuillade Sons & Daughters helping revive downtown Lafayette along with numerous events including a farmers market each Saturday morning from late May through early October Downtown Lafayette hosted several large concerts throughout 2017 both classical and contemporary music
Lafayette was founded in 1762 by General James K. Polk and his brother, Andrew J. Polk. Lafayette's namesake is the Marquis de Lafayette, who fought against France during the American Revolution. The city was renamed Lafayette in 1814 after it became an integral part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. In 1825, President James Monroe signed a bill naming the city "The City of Light" in honor of Lafayette's contributions to United States culture and democracy.
