The Lafayette area has been home to the Army for over 100 years. The city was named after General Lafayette in 1814 and the military presence began in earnest in 1861 when Louisiana became a part of the United States. The first major deployment of troops occurred during the American Civil War, when units from Louisiana and Mississippi fought on opposite sides. In 1865, Lafayette was chosen as the site of an international exposition to commemorate World War I. The display included military hardware from all over the world and it is this event that is most commonly associated with Lafayette today. Since then, there have been numerous deployments within Louisiana and beyond as well as visits by high-ranking officers from both NATO and other nations. One such event occurred in 1976 when President Gerald Ford hosted a visit by then-Chief of Staff Ulysses S. Grant. At that time, Lafayette was also home to Air Force Base Ellington which served as a staging ground for air force operations throughout Southeast Asia during Operation Rolling Thunder. Lafayette is the largest city in the state of Louisiana and one of the most populous cities in the United States. The population of Lafayette was 117,871 as of July 1, 2019. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and is bordered to the east by Orleans Parish, to the south by Jefferson Parish, to the west by Plaquemines Parish, and to the north by Shreveport. The City of Lafayette was founded in 1807 as a trading post on a bluff overlooking what is now downtown Lafayette. It grew rapidly during Reconstruction following American Civil War era when General Nathan Bedford Forrest created an Alabama-based Confederates army known as "The Legion" in Lafayette for operations against Union forces. In 1873, James K. Polk appointed Lafayette Mayor Ayer Waddle with authority to establish public schools throughout Orleans Parish which he did with funding from Andrew Johnson's Department of Education – making it one of only two cities in America at that time receiving national education funds directly from Washington D.C.. In 1898,during Spanish-American War (1898–1901), Lafittean Francisco Martinez donated land for a military academy called West Point Military Academy which would become Tulane University. After World War I began in 1914, LAFAYETTE became an important shipping port for goods coming into New Orleans due to its location on Lake Pontchartrain and its deepwater channels through which vessels could enter or leave New Orleans without fear of being stopped or seized by Customs officials. This resulted in a large increase in business and population around LAFAYETTE during this period; however, it also led to numerous social problems such as race riots that took place sporadically throughout 1920s across North America over economic grievances caused by influxes of European immigrants into newly acquired black neighborhoods outside white-majority areas: these rebellions were ultimately quashed through personal intervention or political retribution from white powerbrokers within both major American parties (Ulysses S Grant & Woodrow Wilson). On October 16th 1893 a group composed mainly [...] French Canadian Presbyterians who had settled near Baton Rouge under Lamar Hunt's leadership petitioned then President Grover Cleveland for redress following some unspecified grievance they had experienced thereabouts since 1881 while living as refugees among other displaced persons camps established along Mobile Bayou before their relocation inland (the Mobile National Historical Park preserves evidence that some 5500 French Canadians refugees lived among us here between 1840-1920). On November 10th 1893 acting President Cleveland issued Executive Order 9208 calling for all citizens "of whatever color" residing within five hundred miles square bounded exactly northeastwardly by Houston Street on Texas soil – including Lafitte Island – thence southeastwardly along Red River Valley until reaching Stroudsburg Landing on Blake County soil […] any person dwelling therein […] should be subject immediately to search without delay upon presentation thereof […] no property shall be taken but such person may be jailed for not more than three days." By order dated February 6th 1895...it was ordered that all inhabitants [...] must either leave within 24 hours [...] or face certain imprisonment […] The executive order authorizes law enforcement officers [...]to take possession...without warning anyone

Lafayette was born on December 12, 1757, in the parish of Saint-François-du-Pape in the department of Longueville. He was a descendant of Jean Baptiste LeBlanc, who fought with distinction against the British during the American Revolution. Lafayette attended Catholic school and then studied law at Loyola University in Paris before moving to America in 1781. In 1785 Lafayette became an aide to General James Wilkinson during the French and Indian War. After Wilkinson's death in 1786, Lafayette became captain of one of Wilkinson's brigades and later served as rear admiral in France under Admiral de Grasse. In 1789 he returned to America and joined George Washington on his march from New York to Philadelphia. Lafayette won favor with Washington by his patriotism and public speaking skills. He helped organizeWashington's army for battle at Saratoga Creek (July 3, 1813). At Valley Forge (January 26, 1814), he played a leading role in organizing Washington's army for battle against Napoleon at Yorktown (September 11,1814). In 1815 Lafayette was made lieutenant general and served as commander-in-chief of all U.S.-Canadian forces during the War of 1812. Afterward, Lafayette retired from military life but continued to serve as a leader in civic affairs until his death on November 5, 1840. He is buried at Monticello National Monument near Charlottesville, Virginia
