The Lafayette-based United States Air Force Commemorative Squadron was activated on November 17, 1917 as the "First American Squadron of Fighter Aircraft." The squadron was made up of British and French fighter planes that were delivered to America by the American shipping company Cunard. In 1918, the Aviation Section of General Headquarters United States Army was created to command all air forces in World War I. This section included the First American Squadron of Fighter Aircraft. On May 16, 1918, general headquarters ordered Second Lieutenant Harry Tilton to take command of this squadron and make it an operational flying unit. With Second Lieutenant Tilton at its head, the First American Squadron became one of two fighter units in General Headquarters USAAF for training purposes only; the other being the 1st Fighter Group commanded by Colonel John J. Pershing. During World War II, Lafayette's Air Force Museum served as a repository for Allied aircraft from various theaters during World War II including: Europe (1939-1945), China (1941-1945), North Africa ( 1941 ), Guadalcanal ( 1943 ), and Japan (1946-1947). In addition to military aircraft from these wars, museum staff also collected items related to aviation such as experimental airplanes and models from across America. The museum opened its doors on July 9th, 1984. The Air Force Museum has since grown into one of largest Wings within United States Air Force with more than 2 million visitors annually since opening its doors! Today's mission at the Air Force Museum is "to preserveairpower history through education and exhibition." One important part of this mission is hosting international airshows which provide a unique opportunity for spectators to see USAF aircraft from around the world! Lafayette, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Rapides on the eastern edge of the state of Louisiana. The population was 9,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Lafayette has been home to students and professionals since 1825 when James K. Polk founded West Point Military Academy there as a way to train future U.S. presidents. The city was originally called "New Iberia". In 1787, during the American Revolution, Lafayette's father, Genl James Kleneky Lafayette, served as a colonel in George Washington's army and then became an administrator of French territory after its cession to America. When news arrived that General Marquis de Lafayette had been captured by British forces near Amherstburg in Canada during the war, his family gathered and streamed down from Maine to help liberate him - becoming one of only two American families everto have done so (the other being George Washington's). After La Fayette returned from captivity in France in 1793 he continued his political activism by founding both the United States Congress (1795-1801) and President John Adams' first cabinet (1797-1800). He also played a significant role in creating Batavia Parish within Rapides Parish; it wasnamed for him on December 2nd 1827 following a land donation from Cajun trader Pierre Lacoste Saint Laurent IV.).
