Kenner, Louisiana was founded in 1802 by the French and Spanish. The town became a major shipping point for goods coming from the Mississippi River Valley. Kenner prospered as a slave-based economy until the American Civil War. After the war, Kenner slowly regained its status as an agricultural center. Today, Kenner is a small city with a population of around 50,000 people. The history of Kenner starts with French colonists who arrived in what is now Louisiana on July 4th, 1802. The colonists were looking for land to settle after their successful journey down the Mississippi River and across Canada. They named their new settlement La Pointe du Lac after Mount Laurent (the peak of Quebec), which they had seen from their ship while onboard the sailing vessel St John’s voyage downriver. The first white people to live in La Pointe du Lac were some men called Gros and Lafitte who had married local women and ranching began soon thereafter. By 1830, there were about 100 settlers living in La Pointe du Lac including several families of Huguenots who had left France during the Revolution. During Reconstruction – following the American Civil War – most of these original French colonists moved westward into Oklahoma or Texas where they found work clearing land or joining forces with other Confederate sympathizers against Union forces. A few hundred remained behind to continue farming and related activities until World War II when many returned home due to postwar disarmament regulations put in place by President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal administration . In 1954, when Hurricane Betsy devastated much of southeastern Louisiana including Kenner, many residents chose to return home despite initial offers from nearby Baton Rouge to evacuate them . In 1957-1958 construction began on Interstate 10 which ran through central Louisiana bypassing Kenner; this highway helped revive business at La Pointe du Lac which again experienced rapid growth during post-World War II years.. In 1978–1979 Hurricane Rita destroyed much of eastern Louisiana including much of downtown LaPointeDuLac; however , most residents chose not to leave because they felt that they could rebuild according to their own traditions and values rather than following guidelines set by state government planners who saw only short-term gains potential from evacuation . The community continued strong overall despite Katrina damage although it lost access both physically and emotionally to its downtown core which remain largely inaccessible today
