From the time of its founding in 1803 until the end of World War II, Kenner was a small town in Louisiana. It became an important center for cotton production and trade during the antebellum period. The town's rich white history is also well known, with many notable people having lived and worked here. Some of these include Andrew Johnson, James K. Polk, Ulysses S. Grant, Florence Griffiths Thompson, and Lillie Mae Roberts. Today, Kenner is a small community located about 20 miles west of New Orleans on I-10A. Kenner was founded by Captain John Kenner on March 15th1803 as a landing point for British traders seeking to reach what is now Arkansas Territory. At first the town consisted only of a few homes and a storehouse used by the traders. By 1825 however, the number of residents had increased to over 100 and they built two churches--one dedicated to St. Patrick (later renamed Roman Catholic) and one dedicated to Christmastime theme named Stations Church after nearby stereoscopes that were popular at that time In 1827 Colonel Nathaniel Watkins purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) east of present day Kenner from Captain JohnKenner for $2 per acre In 1840 Colonel Nathan Watkins donated 3 acres (1 hectare) north side lot next door to his home which constituted part of today's downtown core In 1865 Jesse Mayhew donated land southwest corner extending beyond current day Elmwood Avenue That same year William Hinton established "The General Store" on Main Street across from today's municipal building . The store prospered for many years before it closed in 1907 due to prohibition issues During Reconstruction following the Civil War Missouri Compromise ended slavery within Confederate States but did not free all slaves so some remained in bondage in Arkansas Territory including those in eastern Louisiana including Kenner which continued into 1919 when it merged with Plaquemines Parish becoming Oneida Parish Finally in 1920 Oneida parish disbanded itself creating Kenner again as an independent parish under jurisdiction of New Orleans city government However until recently most events occurred within City Limits set by City Council ordinance passed prior thereto making little impact other than aesthetics Today much like then much activity takes place within City Limits while events outside take place largely outside their control

The area was part of Spanish Louisiana until 1803 when it was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
