The Kenner Army Garrison was established in 1881 and saw service during the American Civil War. The Garrison was disbanded in 1865, but was reactivated in 1924 as the Kenner Museum of Art. The Garrison is home to the Louisiana Infantry Museum and History, which contains over 100 artifacts from the Confederate and Union armies. Today, the Garrison is home to the Louisiana Military Academy, which educates cadets from all over Louisiana. Cadet barracks are located on Soldiers' Park across from Preservation Hall. There is also a museum on Beauregard Avenue dedicated to military history in Kenner. Over time, gifts given to the Garrison have included items such as cannons, uniforms, flags, and insignia from both sides of the conflict. In 1931, Governor Huey Long presented two artillery pieces seized by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during his raid on New Orleans with a gift certificate for $1,000 each. These cannons would later be donated toKenner'sArmyGarrison by their new owner-Mayor John Vandalis in 1963 after Forrest's conviction for treasonous behavior against America-a crime that earned him life imprisonment at Fort Benning Barracks in Georgia. The Kenner Army Garrison was a military post located in Kenner, Louisiana. It was established on October 1, 1802 as the Louisiana Battalion of Infantry and served as a garrison for the New Orleans area until its dissolution in 1803. On November 20, 1803, the Baton Rouge Artillery Company was organized at Kenner and was redesignated as the 3rd Regiment of artillery on December 12th. The regiment participated in the Battle of New Orleans on April 14-15, 1814. Brigadier General James Wilkinson ordered that all cannons be destroyed at Kenner on May 15th to prevent them from being used against the Americans during their siege of New Orleans. However, this order was not carried out and some cannons still remain at Kenner today. On July 1st, 1815, Colonel James Wilkinson became brigadier general and ordered that all cannon batteries be disbanded at Kenner so they could be used against Native American villages near Baton Rouge instead. This order also did not come into effect and most of these cannon batteries were later reorganized under Major General Andrew Jackson's command in 1830-1834.
Kenner, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population of Kenner was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The first white people to arrive in what is now Kenner were French colonists who landed in 1718. By 1800, there were just a few hundred citizens living here. By 1804, the U.S. had acquired this area from France and began erecting fortifications to secure it against attack by Spain. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson decided to make Kenner his military headquarters after his victory at New Orleans and moved his headquarters from Mobile to Hereford Barracks east of the parish seat of Jeffersonville (later renamed Kenner). In 1861, Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces commanded by Major General John C Pemberton near here as part of their drive southward along I-10. The battle resulted in one Union soldier fatalities and five Confederate soldiers captured or killed including Ewell himself; however, the town was not burned down as many residents believed would happen if Union troops had won control of the area. After the Civil War ended on April 9th 1865, Reconstruction began in America which meant that African Americans were given the right to vote and hold public office although they still faced discrimination throughout much of America outside black communities until well into the 20th century. On January 14th 1870 voters in nearby Monroe voted 3-1 for incorporation into Jefferson Parish with a total population of 2,527 residents; however this measure failed because only white males could be candidates for office (the incorporators failed to collect enough signatures). In 1889 oil extraction began onshore within what is now downtown Kenner when oil was discovered offshore about two miles southeast of town limits; however production ceased due to environmental problems caused by salt water intrusion during low tide times which destroyed wells and ruined beaches aroundtown limits during high tide times leading some residents to move out while others built homes on abandoned offshore oilfields sites today known as Crescent Beach State Park and Old Refinery Site #2 (Refinery Site #1 can also be found across current I-10 from downtown towards Coastal Road). On November 25th 1923 Hurricane Flora made landfall near Defiance Bayou just northwest of downtown Kenner killing 26 people before making its way ashore about 8 miles northeast of town limits causing substantial damage including loss or destructionof over 100 homes and businesses with an estimated $3 million worth ($102 million USD) in damages alone; Keneder’s mayor JF Broussard refused requests for assistance due to financial constraints typical during these tough times despite storm surge predictions that “estimates show that waves up to 12 feet [3 meters] high will inundate whole sections [of town]…. Houses may topple over onto streets rather than be saved”(New Orleans Times Picayune article dated November 28th 1923 p A11)).
