Jennings, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,319 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Jennings Township. The community was named for General John R. Jennings and his family who settled there in 1871. The first permanent European settlers in Jennings were Frenchmen who landed on the Atchafalaya River during the Baton Rouge Purchase by France in 1803. They soon abandoned their boats and built homes on a bluff overlooking the river near what is now Old Jennings Road. In 1837, Ulysses S. Grant granted two tracts of land to James Henson and others as part of the Louisiana Purchase from Spain. These tracts extended from present-day Old Jennings east to Higgins Road and west to what is now Redemptorist Avenue South in Lafitte City limits. In 1848, when Mississippi acquired Texas from Mexico, it also purchased Jennings township from France for $8000 cash and 10 acres (4 hectares). The new owners began building a log cabin known as "The General's House" which still stands today across Railroad Street from the original general store (now known as First Baptist Church). By 1850, they had erected a larger frame structure which served as their first schoolhouse and home until 1865 when they moved into an adjacent brick block next door to First Baptist Church which still stands today with its original hammerbeam roofline and simple gable end chimneys (Figure 1). General John R. Jennings arrived here on horseback on January 12th 1870 after leading an army through Central Texas against Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek Bridge while campaigning for President Ulysses S Grant’s re-election bid that year (Figure 2). He had come downriver along with other units of Army of Northern Missouri under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Culp about midway between Republican strongholds of Baton Rouge and New Orleans when he heard about American victories at Vicksburg Bridge over Buena Vista Creek Bridge on December 15th 1863 resulting in Mexican overthrow of Emperor Pancho Villa including most of Mexico’s southern border regions except those located east or south of Veracruz River Valley where Federal troops remained garrisoned under United States command ever since [1]. Upon his return home he immediately ordered all such troops mustered out within 24 hours or be discharged without pay; this order soon became law throughout America because no one wanted any more enlisted men Deployed outside America “to die like animals instead of fighting bravely for our country” [2]. With victory at Buena Vista Creek Bridge over Mexico afforded Americans breathing space inside their own borders General John R.-Jennyndson decided to take up farming hereabouts where he & his wife establish their farmstead just outside present day town limits c1900/1910 following instructions received letter dated November 6th 1860 From then On actual title deeds were not created but conveyed through several proprietors right thru death etc until 1920 When first Trustee named Jno Fenton took office lot # 40 was transferred back thru intestate succession To heirs male line direct 3rd cousin once removed Mrs A B Campbell

Jennings was a small town in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Jennings and his wife Rebecca. The community had no school until 1850, when it purchased one from the neighboring community of Prairie du Chien. In 1865, Jennings' post office was renamed for General James Fenton (1795-1864), who had fought in the American Civil War on the Union side. The population of Jennings peaked at around 1,200 in 1880 but declined to 100 by 1910. By 1930, the population had decreased to 50 and by 1990 it was down to 10 people.
Jennings was founded in 1763 by Captain John Jennings and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for the General Washington who had helped to drive French out of Louisiana in 1763. In 1802, Jennings became a parish with a population of 2,500. It was abolished in 1868 and its land divided among various other parishes.
