The Jennings Marine Museum is a nonprofit educational organization that specializes in maritime history and culture. The museum was founded in 1998 by Houston businessman, Donny Armstrong. Donny Armstrong donated the land on which the museum sits to the town of Jennings in 1998 in order to promote maritime tourism. The first exhibit at the museum was "The Voyages of Captain James Cook" which featured artifacts from Cook's voyages and exploration of Oceania. In 2007, the Museum added an exhibit called " Louisiana's Cajun Coast: A History of Seafood." This exhibit showcased seafood from throughout Louisiana and its interaction with the Gulf Coast region. In 2009, the Museum partnered with local non-profit group, CoastalLouisiana.org to create a roadside attraction known as "Maritime Park." This attraction featured interactive exhibits about Maritime history such as an artificial reef made from recycled materials and wreckage from shipswrecked around Orleans Parish; USS Constitution Museum; and more. The goal of this project was to provide visitors with a unique perspective on coastal Louisiana through maritime history. In 2013, Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage to parts of Orleans Parish including Jenkins Beach where CoastalLouisiana had set up their booth for visitors to explore during their event known as “Sandy Saturdayâ€. As a result, many items from that booth were damaged or lost including historical photos and artifacts from Jenkins Beach that still remain at CoastalLouisiana today
Jennings, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Assumption, La., located on the banks of the Sabine River. The population was 2,872 at the 2000 census. Jennings is also home to St. John's University and Harding University. The town was founded in 1851 by Captain Arthur Jennings as a salt storage and trading post on the east bank of the Sabine River. The first settler in Jennings was John Aiken, who arrived in 1852. The name Jennings was chosen for its similarity to that of an American patriot—George Washington—and for its proximity to Natchitoches, which served as America's capital from 1785 until 1800. In 1875, Captain Jennings donated land to St. John's University which became one of Louisiana's first public universities. In 1923, Harding University joined StJohns and renamed themselves after Commodore James Halsey Harding (1853-1920). In 1984, Hurricane Blanche caused damage to buildings and other physical properties in Jennings but no loss of life or injury occurred; however, some homes were damaged beyond repair

It is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River, about 18 miles (29 km) west of Baton Rouge and 10 miles (16 km) east of Tyler, Texas. Jennings was founded by settlers from northeastern England in 1814 as a small town called "New Orleans". The original settlement grew to be an agricultural center due to its location on the fertile lowlands bordering what is now Arkansas and Mississippi rivers. The early residents were farmers who raised cotton, corn, horses, cattle and poultry; but after 1830 cotton production declined because of flooding caused by severe thunderstorms and hurricanes. In 1836, Jennings became part of Claiborne Parish when it was split off from East Baton Rouge Parish. In 1840 it incorporated as a city under the name "New Orleans", but reverted to its previous name in 1849 after becoming part of Rapides Parish. Jennings experienced significant growth during World War II with the arrival of thousands of American military personnel who built defence plants and other infrastructure in support of Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany. The war led to increased industry and jobs in Jennings; today's economy is based largely upon tourism which has seen increasing development around downtown Jennings as well as new businesses sprouting up throughout central Dickinson Street district that runs along both banks of the river near various hotels including Quality Inn & Suites - Madison Square Garden which opened in 2006 - Four SeasonsHotels & Resorts which relocated from New Orleans three years ago - Hilton Garden Inn which opened two years ago - Holiday Inn Express also opened recently - all totaling over 1 million square feet (93 ha).
