Jennings is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jennings was named for John Jennings, an early settler. The first store in Jennings opened in 1854. In 1907, Jennings had a post office and two churches: First Baptist and Second Baptist. In 1930, the school system merged with New Orleans public schools to form the City School District of New Orleans; Jennings became part of that district. The land where Jennings now stands was once swampy and marshy; it has been improved by irrigation projects and other means since its founding. Early settlers were farmers who raised corn, cotton, potatoes, sugar beets, chickens (and later pigs), rabbits, and hogs on their plantations near present-day Jenningsville; some also built houses on what are now dirt roads or private lots within walking distance of their homes. In 1894 when Howell Trask bought three hundred acres (1 km2) of land west of present-day Jenningsville from James Ketchum for $500 cash plus five horses and four cattle he called "Trask's Prairie." Trask developed this property into one of the most important plantation agriculture areas in Lafourche Parish until after World War II when white flight to metropolitan areas began to dominate economic life thereabouts so much so that many farms have been replaced by suburban developments over time--a process which has accelerated since Katrina made landfall on August 29th 2005
