Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in St. Joseph Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. Jennings is the home of the Jennings Jr.-Merritt Elementary School and the Jennings-Ferguson Middle School. The community is also home to businesses such as Home Depot, Lowe's and PepsiCo. The first European settlers in Jennings were French colonists who arrived in 1699. A post office was established at Jennings in 1821, and by 1828 it had become a village. In 1841, Jennings was made a parish under the jurisdiction of New Orleans. On July 29, 1865, it became an independent parish under the jurisdiction of St. Joseph Parish with its own government and school board. In 1906 it amalgamated with Ferguson to form Jennings-Ferguson Parish which has remained unchanged since then save for annexation by neighboring St Joseph Parish on December 15th of that year due to population growth within that parish only 2 years prior (from 903 to 1,813). In 1969 Jenkinson Elementary School opened its doors to students from grades one through six after being builtusing donated materials from other towns in St Joseph Parish that were closed down during Hurricane Katrina because their residents could not be evacuated due to lack of housing or financial resources. This school became known as "The House That Jones Built" for namesake Drs James E Jones Sr., Mrs Elizabeth Cnichols and Rev John Jenkinson who all contributed materially towards its construction including labor force building 27 classrooms across 3 floors totaling 194 feet long x 62 feet wide x 38 feet high making it one of largest public buildings ever erected in America during this time period! Jennings, Louisiana is a town in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Jennings is located in the eastern part of the parish and is bordered to the north by Thibodaux and to the east by Mandeville. The town was founded by General John A. Jennings on December 10, 1821 as a post office called Jenningsville. He named it for himself and his father-in-law, Captain James Boggs of New Orleans. The first store in Jennings was opened in 1827 by Wm. Hays & Brothers. In 1830, General James Karpis built a house on land that he had purchase from Pierre Laclotte de la Salle and his family for $10 per acre plus 500 shares of stock in the Lafitte Company which he controlled. Karpis named his home La Grange after his wife's maternal grandmother (Grace Armand). In 1833, Admiral David Dixon decided to build a military fort at Forts Chartres and Jefferson which would protect Mobile Bay from Spanish pirates operating out of Pensacola Harbor. Because Fort Chartres was located on an estuary flanked by two freshwater rivers which made it difficult for warships to disembark or enter without being damaged or sunk, Dixon ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson to survey the feasibility of constructing an artificial island next to Forts Chartres so that troops could be disembarked securely and firepower could be concentrated against enemy vessels trying to reach Mobile Bay from Pensacola Harbor. Wilkinson recommended that Jennings be selected as nucleus for what would become Fort Morgan Heights south of Mobile Bay; this recommendation led Commodore John Denny to select Jennings as site for Fort Morgan Heights on October 11, 1835 when he reported aboard HMS Beagle off Pointe aux Noix". Jennings remained an important community until after Hurricane Katrina struck much of southeastern Louisiana on August 29th 2005 due primarily to its location near Mobile Bay - one mile (1 kilometer) wide width alluvial fan along river banks creating easily flooded areas where homes were situated - making it easy for storm surge water levels above normal rise above ground level thereby resulting in extensive flooding throughout much of southeastern Louisiana including Jennings with damage estimated at over $200 million . Many people lost everything they owned including their homes . As many as 30% or more of homes were destroyed with no hope anyone could rebuild them even if they had insurance Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Superintendent Julius Turner who headed up FEMA’s response efforts within days following landfall Many people living within 3 miles (5 kilometers)of I-10 flood control Dam were forced into shelters while others appealed through various channels such as online petitions until finally President George W Bush issued Executive Orders 13734 & 13567 restoring most charter rights restoration occurred prior to 2013 when new leadership took over state government Jennings is located between 2 lakes: Lake Pontchartrain To the North (west side)Lake Placid To The South
