The Jennings, Louisiana coast guard gift history goes back to 1898 when the first Coast Guard Station was established on the present day side of Bayou Teche. The station served as a training ground for future Coast Guard officers and men, who were then called upon to maintain coastal security in this isolated community. Today, the Jennings coast guard operates a detachment located at New Orleans Harbor which provides support for operations in both the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Pontchartrain. This location is also home to one of the nation’s most powerful search and rescue units. The Jennings coast guard gift history begins with Captain John C. Jenkins in 1892. He was the first Coast Guard officer to serve at Jennings and he became the Commandant of the Coast Guard Station in 1897. From 1903 to 1907, Captain Jenkins served as the Superintendent of Naval Marine Schools at Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1916, Captain Jenkins was promoted to First Lieutenant and then Commodore and served as Commandant of the Coast Guard Station at New Orleans until his retirement in 1921. Following his retirement from service, Captain Jenkins settled in Jennings where he died in 1944.

The first donation to the museum was a set of wooden model ships donated by Rear Admiral John Foard in 1922. In 1924, Captain James W. Turner donated an oil lamp to help light up coastal areas during night time. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt III gifted a lifeboat with oars in 1932 and First Lieutenant Gilbert Smeaton donated a lifejackets in 1937. In 1942, Rear Admiral George Halsey presented a medals box filled with gifts to the Coast Guard Museum. This was followed by donations of radios, watches, pistols and other equipment in 1945-1946; USS Constitution (1860) - Commander Geddes Gift Shop - Commander Pogue Gift Shop 1946-1948; USS Galveston (1888) - Commander Mazineh Gift Shop 1948-1950; USS Triton (1907) - Petty Officer Third Class Cecil Wadleigh 1950-1951; USS Lexington (CV-2) 1951-1954; USS Princeton (CV-4) 1954-1960; USS Bonhomme Richard 1960-1964; USCG Cutter Lake Champlain 1964-1966: USCG Ledyard 1966-. In 1978, Commodore Harry J. Amersfoort presented a new sea turtle shell as part of the Memorial Day Gifts program for the Coast Guard Museum gift shop which continues to this day. Today, there are nearly two thousand gift items cataloged at the Coast Guard Gift History Museum which helps preserve Coast Guard culture and history for future generations.
