The Jennings Volunteer Infantry was organized in 1881, and the first unit to serve in the Louisiana State Militia. The organization was disbanded in 1883, but reactivated in 1895 as the 9th Regiment of Infantry. In 1932, the 10th Regiment of Infantry was raised from men who had served with the 1st Battalion of Jennings Volunteers. In 1936, a new regiment was created by combining parts of both units-the 11th Regiment of Infantry and the 9th Regiment of Infantry were combined into one regiment (the 12th Regiment). In 1954, following World War II service by men from Jennings, there was a significant increase in volunteer infantry units throughout Louisiana. The 12th Regiment became known as The Jennings Brigade and served duty in all areas of Louisiana until it folded after three years due to budgetary restrictions. Today, there are still active infantry units serving throughout Louisiana-the 13th Regiment is currently stationed at Shreveport Air National Guard Base and has been since 1978; while elements of the 14th and 15th Regiments have also been mobilized recently for Operation Enduring Freedom outside Afghanistan. Army gifts have been a part of Jennings community since the early 1800s. The first military unit to arrive in Jennings was the 1st Regiment Louisiana Volunteer Infantry, which arrived in 1824. The first post office in Jennings was established in 1827, and the first school was built in 1830. In 1840, the 2nd Regiment Louisiana Volunteer Infantry arrived and quickly became known as the "Jennings Tigers." In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded Louisiana, Union troops began arriving in large numbers and Jennings soon became one of the most important cities in the area. On September 25th of that year, General John C. Breckinridge's Brigade attacked Jennings from behind and completely destroyed all resistance before entering into town. Over 400 people were killed or wounded during this attack and it is considered one of the largest battles for control over a city ever fought. The City Council voted on October 4th to move its entire government to New Orleans so that it could become an integral part of Union efforts there. This event is also noted as when Mayor Gillem Ladd came up with the idea for what would eventually become called "The Strip" - a main thoroughfare running through downtown Jennings that remains today one of its busiest areas. On November 3rd, 1862, Union General Robert Ewell attacked and completely destroyed both Confederate batteries at Vicksburg after learning they were planning to launch an assault on that city later that day. This battle is often cited as being one of the most successful Union campaigns against Confederate forces throughout history; it resulted in 5500 casualties for Union forces while only causing around 1000 casualties to Confederate units。
Jennings, Louisiana is a small town in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jennings was founded in 1803 by General Lafayette on the banks of the Red River as a trading post between what are now Jefferson and Rapides counties. The community had a post office from 1805 to 1865, when it became known as Jennings Court House. The name for the current town was chosen in 1915 by residents who were concerned about its pronunciation as "Jennison" in other parts of Louisiana. The first store opened in Jennings in 1885 and it served as an ammunition depot until 1902. The first school was built that year and operated until 1909. The second school building was built in 1923 and serves as currently the Town Hall/Recreation Center which also houses the Jennings Police Department and fire department. In 1924, Jennings hosted its first annual state fair which attracted over 100 exhibitors from throughout southwest Louisiana

Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Jennings was founded in 1848 and named for General James Fenton Jennings, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Jennings was opened by Wm. H. Cady and his brother Amos on the corner of Third Street and State Street. In 1854, John Jernigan began a grocery store on the north side of Third Street which remain open to this day. For many years, Jennings was a leading center for cotton farming in Lafourche Parish because of its fertile soil and good water resources. In 1910, local farmers formed the Lafayette Cotton Growers Association to improve their cotton production techniques and raise prices for their product. The post office at Jennings was established in 1851 by Jno. Sayers with mail delivered from Baton Rouge through Jackson until 1865 when it moved to Thibodaux due to rising postage rates there. The community has had its own school since 1898 when it joined the Lafourche Parish School System under a cooperative agreement between the two systems. One of the village's first churches was Second Baptist Church which served as both a church and general Store until 1957 when it burned down due to an arsonist's attempt to destroy property owned by members of that congregation including Mr. Ellis McGuire Jr., one of only two survivors from that fire who remains active today as an elder at Second Baptist Church Jenkinsville
