The United States Army has been deploying gifts to the Jennings community for years. The Soldiers and Sailors family tradition of giving back begins with Christmas, when each branch sends a gift to the citizens of Jennings. This year’s package will include a new rifle, grenade launcher, and gear for the military in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The history of Army Gifts goes back to World War I. On December 6th, 1917, General John J. Pershing presented a gift from the United StatesArmy to Mayor John Fenton on behalf of all the people of Jennings. That same year, General Pershing sent a small parcel wrapped in paper stuffed with munitions to Mrs. Harry Hinton on her farm in nearby White Sands Township for use as storage during World War I. In 1919, Colonel James Wenneker created an organization called “Jennings Patriotic Society” which donated canned goods and other items from local businesses towards troops fighting in Europe at that time known as “The Great War”. After America entered World War II, General George Custer gave a Bible along with five cans of gasoline and four bottles of oil to Mrs. Lillian Anderson-Harding on November 10th 1945 near present day McKenzie Road just outside Jennings proper limits while he was stationed at Camp Livingston southwest of town- this was also commemorated by erecting an outdoor plaque located next to that location today! In 1994, Captain Tom Doherty presented 1st Lieutenant Jeffery Pappas with his Special Forces Colt AR15 Rifle & Ammo stolen from Ft Hood during Operations Noble Eagle & Mideast Desert Storm!!! Today’s donation is unique because it is not only one item amongst many given through these annual gifting events but it is also one belonging specifically to Sergeant First ClassJeffery Pappas who lost his life serving our country in Iraq!!

Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 1,337 at the 2010 census. Jennings is named after General James K. Jennings who fought in the American Civil War and governor of Louisiana from 1865-1868. The town had a post office from 1875 to 1898 and then again from 1907 until 1951. Jennings was founded by John Witherspoon on December 5, 1869 as an agricultural settlement west of Baton Rouge. In 1886 it became a city with a population of 3,000 people when it annexed part of Stroudsburg, Maryland. The city has since lost its importance and now primarily provides services to the surrounding rural areas.
