The Marine Corps was established in 1846 as a military service within the Louisiana Territory. The first Marines were recruited in Houma, Louisiana and served in that location during the Mexican-American War. With the end of the war, marines stationed at Houma continued to serve through World War I. In 1922, marines deployed to Haiti to help suppress a revolt against French rule. They remained there until 1925 when they returned home. From 1925-1929, marines manned five coastal artillery batteries in New Orleans during prohibition years. After repeal of prohibition, marine detachments manned coastal artillery batteries again from 1930-1935; however their deployment was limited to coastal areas outside of New Orleans because of Prohibition’s effects on naval activities and Naval Reserve units manning shore batteries outdoors. On October 14th 1935, Marines landed at Anzio beachhead following two months of siege by the Allies against Mussolini’s forces occupying Naples (now Rome). The campaign ended with the fall of Rome on April 9th 1936 and Italy became an ally of Nazi Germany. On November 3rd 1935, Marines landed at Taranto (now Turin) after weekslong bombardment by Allied ships situated off the coast for fear that it would become a German port or air base used for aviation development projects under Nazi control.From Taranto Marine Barracks continental patrols went out into open sea search for Italian submarines which had been reported operating near Italian coasts since 1934 despite repeated assurances by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini that these vessels were not any longer operative. Patrols also patrolled along Tyrrhenian Sea coastline looking for suspected Axis submarines east of Catania harbor although no interceptions were made as result of this effort

Houma, Louisiana is a small community located in southern Louisiana. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. Houma is bordered by Plaquemines Parish to the east, Jefferson Parish to the north, and St. Bernard Parish to the west. It lies on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Houma were French voyageurs who traveled through this area in 1521-22. They called it Natchitoches (meaning "place where there are no trees"). In 1715, during the War of 1812, General Nicolas Désiré Chouteau's American forces discovered this area and named it for General Pierre de la Salle. This name change was probably due to Choctaw Indian interference with early European exploration of this region. The town site was laid out by Captain John Sublette in 1793 as part of a land grant he received from King Louis XVI of France. Captain Sublette had come downriver from New Orleans on an exploratory trip in 1786-87 when he discovered oil wells near present day Lafayette Boulevard and I-10W exit 5A (now known as FM 1094). He named his new settlement Nouvelle Ville (New City) because he felt that its location would be more strategic than current locations such as Baton Rouge or Alexandria since it would provide security against Spanish attack from across the river should hostilities break out between France and Spain over territory south of Mexico City. Houma began experiencing growth afterCaptainSublette's claim was approved by both Houses of Congress on January 25, 1800; however development remained slow until 1803 when Colonel James Ketchum built a sawmill here which became one of Houma's most important economic engines during its early years. Ketchum also founded Ketchum Academy in 1802 which soon became one of America's leading higher education institutions for women; today it remains an important center for female entrepreneurship in Louisiana In 1808, Jean Lafitte established himself at Pointe Aux Herbes downstream from New Orleans while preparations were being made for his attempt to reestablish French control over much of South Louisiana following Napoleon Bonaparte's decision not to invade that region under Emperor Joseph II some two years earlier After Lafitte's capture by American forces at Baton Rouge on October 30th 1814 following his successful raid on Mobile Bay & Siege Of Villereal Plantation (& Battle Of cleared Acadiana), Houdini bought him out for $350,000 cash just prior to his extradition hearing before United States Circuit Court Judge David Cushing Montero dated April 6th 1865 - thus ending all legal claims against him worldwide! Houma is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and the seat of Houma Parish. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Houma is an agricultural center, with cotton, rice, and beans being its most important crops. The city has a humid subtropical climate that provides ample rainfall year-round but sees very little snowfall due to its high elevation above mean sea level. The first evidence of habitation in what is now Houma dates back to 9200 BC when Paleo-Indian hunters killed deer and other animals on the lower Marche d'Iberia River valley floor where modern day Houma is located today. The area around present day Houma was occupied by the Chickasaw Nation for over 10,000 years before European settlement began in 1718 when French explorer Pierre D'Urville arrived on his ship La Conte de la Louisiane and discovered bogs and shallow seas near present day Mobile Bayou. In 1803, a small community called "Houma" was established by General James Kenedy as part of his larger plan to create new military posts along Mobile Bayous south of Baton Rouge in order to protect against British attacks from Canada during the War for Independence. In 1804, Colonel John Troup set up a post here known as "Troup's Hill". Troup's Hill later became Courthouse Square after it housed both courts-martial (established in 1808) and civil court proceedings until 1865 (when it moved to downtown). In 1809, American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Jackson bought land here from local Indian chiefs for $5 per acre under Washington's Land Act following his victorious Battle of New Orleans campaign which ended British control over North Louisiana . Jackson renamed this area "Houma" in honor of Jean Baptiste Marie Loutre who had been captured by British forces at Pensacola Florida during the successful Invasion of America on April 12th , 1780 - just two days prior to Jackson's victory at Haldimand Trail Bridge over Mobile Bayous tributary Old Alabama River near present day Lafayette . In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell built Fort Hindman overlooking Iba Landing on Mobile Bayous to prevent Union troops coming ashore through Iba Harbor on Red river below; today this fort stood abandoned within reach of Union forces across Mobile Bayous until February 1862 when Confederate General Pinchot destroyed it using dynamiting charges after successfully leading an assault against Union entrenched positions there resulting in repulse at Haldimand Forks northeast corner OfMobile County, AL .
