The first Coast Guard Station in Houma was established in 1892. The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement, public safety and maritime assistance to the community of Houma since then. In 1937, the Coast Guard Station was relocated to its present location on Mowat Avenue. In 1951, the station was renamed the Coast Guard Auxiliary Base Houma. In 1974, the Auxiliary Base was merged into the United States Coast Guard District 6 and became Headquarters for that district. In 2007, Headquarters for US Coast guard District 6 moved from New Orleans to Houma as part of a larger reorganization of districts across Louisiana. Houma is now home to both Headquarters for US Coast guard District 6 as well as two other district headquarters - US coast guard Sector 2 in Biloxi and US coastguard Sector 3 in Gulfport - which together make up United States coast guard District 8. Since its establishment, the Coast Guard has played an important role in helping protect our coastal communities and waterways from accidents and threats such as piracy and drug trafficking. With more than 12,000 members dedicated to their mission, they are always ready to assist when needed – whether it’s rescuing people in danger or stopping a terrorist attack on our shores!

Houma, Louisiana is a small town in the state of Louisiana. The population was 1,868 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Red River. Houma first came to prominence in 1802 when General Andrew Jackson invaded and captured it from the French during his invasion of Louisiana. The town rapidly grew due to its strategic location and its access to water resources. In 1907, Houma was renamed for Confederate general Pemberton after he helped lead Union forces against Napoleon Bonaparte's forces at the Battle of New Orleans. After years of decline, Houma experienced a resurgence in recent decades because of its attractions including its beaches, culture, and economy. The town has been named a "New Orleans-Baton Rouge Neighborhood" by CNNMoney and Forbes magazine. In 2016, Houma was designated as one of America's 10 most endangered communities by Survival International because it suffers from high levels of poverty, crime, environmental degradation, lack of infrastructure and health conditions that make it difficult for locals to maintain their standard of living.
The Coast Guard gift history begins with the Continental Navy. The Continental Navy was a volunteer maritime militia that fought in the American Revolutionary War on behalf of the British Crown. In 1775, when the Continental Congress passed the Declaration of Independence, they ordered all navy vessels to leave port and not to carry any arms or ammunition. This prohibition applied even to privateers, which were considered pirates by English law. In response, the Continental Navy organized itself into two fleets: one under Admiral Samuel Chase and one led by Commodore John Paul Jones. The first engagement between these fleets took place on Dec 5, 1775 off Cape May, NJ when Jones's fleet attacked Chase's flagship Surprise after she refused to turn over seized supplies tothe Americans. After this victory Jones vowed never again to let an Englishman dictate his policy in America. With increased hostilities throughout the war, Congress began authorizing appropriations for coast guard duties at various points along the United States coastline. By 1787 there were 11 coast guard stations along the entire country; however only 2 percent of total active military strength was devoted to guarding our coasts. It wasn't until 1809 that a permanent coast guard dockyard was built at New York City; however it wasn't operational until 1815 due largely to budgetary constraints placed upon US naval forces during early nineteenth century wars with Great Britain (specifically against Mexico). From its inception as a volunteer militia service through wartime expansion and post-war amendments permitting federal funding and personnel assignment within state militias (as well as establishment of national border patrol), Coast Guard Gift History has been characterized as primarily ceremonial in nature - serving primarily as a service away from home for visiting dignitaries and other government officials who may need accessorize their visits with some form ofautical amusement or coastal defense display (e.g., model ships). Houma is a small town in the southeastern corner of Louisiana on the Mississippi River. The population was 31,645 at the 2010 census. Houma is the largest town in Rapides Parish and one of its three municipalities. The other two are Slidell and Lake Charles. The first Europeans to visit Houma were French traders in 1699. A post office was established there in 1766, but it did not take off until 1827 when James Ketchum started a ferry service from his house at the mouth of the river to reach Houma from St. Bernard Parish. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson founded an army at Biloxi and sent troops overland to help construct a bridge across the river near present-day Slidell. When he arrived at Baton Rouge, he took lodgings with Lt Gov John Putnam and ordered his men to cross over on horseback so they could be received by Putnam's wife who had taken them into her home for dinner that night; this event is also documented as being one of Jackson's levellances (a distinction given to officers). In 1849, Josephine Bienville became governor of Louisiana after defeating Jefferson Davis in a Senate election; she soon began construction on what would later become known as Bienville Capitol Complex which included both government buildings and a palace for her own use. The first public school opened in 1853; it was operated by private individuals until 1861 when state law required all schools within 1/2 mile of any courthouse open to students from 8am to 4pm regardless of race or sex; subsequently, all schools were opened under state control starting with Bienville High School which reopened in 1957 after being closed for more than 50 years due primarily to lack of funding opportunities despite several efforts by various organizations including local businesses). During World War II, Houma played hostelry for military personnel stationed along the Gulf Coast including Camp Atterbury (now Alameda County Jail) and Green Bay Naval Air Station; many homes remained standing today as barracks or aircraft hangar spaces during that time period. In 1951, newly formed Rapides Parish transferred its entire land area eastward from Jefferson Davis parish into Rapides Parish effective July 1st that year following their annexation into that parish by Hurricane Hillary which caused extensive damage throughout much of south Louisiana particularly withinJefferson Davis parish; prior thereto most areas withinRapides Parish remained untouched by Hurricane Hillary although some did suffer significant damage such as Hahn’s Mill where water levels rose so high above normal that power failures occurred lasting up until 7 pm); immediately following Hurricane Hillary many farmers abandoned their crops due mainly to lack of food available either locally or through neighboring states such as Texas) making way for houmase developers who soon began filling up these vacant lands with housing projects designed specifically for workersstatus while remaining largely unoccupied resulting in increased homelessness rates among these populationsparticularly amongst black residents) today much attention remains focused upon redeveloping these portionsofRapidesParishin an effort viefor comprehensive redevelopment plans considering all aspects associatedwith rapidship namely commerce, education & cultural arts
