It was named for General James A. Hammond, who served as military governor of Louisiana from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840. Hammond is located on the lower Mississippi River at (9.529723, -92.639689). Upscale neighborhoods of homes on high-rise blocks line the river's edge while small villages dot the rolling countryside around it including Houma and New Orleans. The town is situated within Plaquemines Parish which includes much of Acadiana region of Louisiana The first white settler in what would become Hammond was Julius Hammond Sr., who moved from Kentucky with his family to live near Baton Rouge in 1836 after being offered land by General James A. Hammond himself following the Battle of San Jacinto that ended Texas’s attempt to gain independence from Mexico. The Hammonds were among those who left Texas for Louisiana after Mexican troops burned their home state capital of Austin on July 6, 1836 followed by an attack on neighboring Baton Rouge two weeks later rendering all but a few miles of that cityuninhabitable as well as numerous other towns and villages across East Texas during what became known as the Mexican War of Independence or Texan Revolt against Spanish rule over Latin America (). In 1840, General James A. Hammond purchased 1/2 acre (0·09 km²) Lots 3 & 4 in present-day downtown Hammond from Captain John Sibley for $65 (£41/$75). This grant allowed him to build a mansion house on this lot – now part of the Historic American Buildings Survey downtown – which he named "Hammond House". He also donated land east side streets between Third Street and Fourth Street now called "Adams Boulevard" northeast corner 2nd Avenue south corner Broadway which became "Houma Boulevard" opposite US Highway 90A/US Highway 90W entering into town today; these streets are still populated with residences today despite having been renamed several times since then including most recently "New Orleans Boulevard" following Hurricane Katrina's landfall there in 2005.; These alleyways ran parallel to each other just off busy street names today until they intersected south side street now called "Old Bridge Road", thence turning north past Saints Mary Roman Catholic Church before coming back east along current Adams Boulevard until they crossed old I-10 just outside modern day Haley Airport where Interstate 10 turned sharply northeastward concurrent with Haley Airport naming its new roadway exit ramps Parkway Drive adjacent to both airport properties becoming one large arterial roadway name once again Hitchcock Road continuing southeastward paralleling Old Bridge Road past St Joseph's Episcopal Church before intersecting West Fork Arkansas River near present day Natchitoches County Line said boundary because it had always been considered part of Attala Parish according to parish records
