Hammond was founded in 1824 by John Stephenson and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its natural resources, which included coffee beans. In 1848, Stephenson constructed a mill that became the basis for Hammond's coffee production. Coffee was produced until the early 1940s when World War II made it difficult to produce coffee beans. Hammond is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 23,528 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Hammond was first settled by Acadians and French Canadians in the 17th century. It became an incorporated town in 1836 and a city in 1881. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census. Hammond's downtown district is home to many large businesses including Tyson Foods and Jardine Matheson Canada Inc.. Hammond has been awarded "Best Place to Live" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine four times and "Best Place to Work" by Human Resources Magazine twice. Hammond is located on I-10 W between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. It can be reached from those cities by taking exit #9 on I-10W or #2A off I-610 eastbound which leads into Baton Rouge; or it can be reached from New Orleans by taking exit 565 (I-10) southbound which leads into Hammond City proper; or it can be reached from Metairie by takingexit 352 (I-985/Uptown) northbound which leads into Metairie proper. As of the census of 2000, there were 20,564 people, 7,711 households, and 5,521 families residing in the city limits; however with its growth over time it has swelled to 31 square miles making it one of the largest cities in Jefferson Parish outside of New Orleans – larger even than East Baton Rouge Parish’s Magnolia parish despite being only 8 square miles larger! The racial makeup of this ever growing community reflected 59% African American with whites making up 27% of all residents while Latinos made up 21%. In terms of age distribution along with other demographics you would find that 35% were under 25 years old while 55% were 45 years old or older! This increases rapidly as one moves up Parade Street through Downtown Hammond where you will find nearly every business open late night as well as most restaurants serving food until 3am! In addition to these major commercial arteries you will also find several small churches dotting the landscape giving some sense for how diverse this community truly is without any walls stopping anyone from coming or going…it truly feels like home away from home! Hammond’s overall economy depends largely on its core sector: Manufacturing – particular meat processing and manufacturing products such as chicken feeders, soy sauce cans etcetera – but also includes services such as health care (27%) and retail leasing (24%). Other sectors that have contributed positively include government employment with 12%, professional & scientific services with 11%, construction with 10%, financing & real estate activities with 9%, Retail trade with 7%, information technology 6%,administrative support 4%. The community was platted in 1834 and named after General John A. Hammond, who served as Commandant of the Louisiana State Troops during the American Civil War. In 1840, Hammond became the county seat of Jefferson Parish and remains so today. Hammond is located at (29.344425,-95.566667). According to the 2010 census, its population was 5,792 people. It is part of the New Orleans– Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Hammond was Pierre Dorion Hammond, who arrived in 1807 from Quebec with his family and began claim to land east of what is now I-10 near Baton Rouge. He developed a farm called "Prairie du Chien" that he sold to James Wilkinson in 1830 for $1 per acre ($27 million at current prices). By 1840, over 60% of all land withinJefferson Parish had been claimed by settlers—more than any other parish outsideofNew Orleans or Baton Rouge! In 1840, General John A. Hammond bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of swampy ground from Wilkinson for $5 per acre ($2 million at current prices). This purchase marked the beginning of what would become known as "Hammond's Valley". By 1850, about one-third of all agricultural land within Jefferson Parish had been acquired by settlers; more than any other parish outsideofNew Orleans or Baton Rouge! In 1860, partway through Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General Alfred Vandalus purchased 1/4 mile (0:6 km) of swampy ground adjacent to present day US 10 from Don Fernando Morafora for $8 per acre ($2 million at current prices). This purchase marked another turning point for Hammond—it would be until 1920 before more than one-tenth of all agricultural land within Jefferson Parish would be acquired by settlers! After Confederate forces burned down Fort Sumter on April 12th 1861 (an event which has been incorrectly attributed to secessionists), General Alfred Vandalus ordered Captain J H Bowen to build a new fortification on high ground just north of present day US 10—renamed Fort Stedman after Bowen's superior officer—in order to protect local residents and commerce from Union attack! Fort Stedman served as an important military installation until it was surrendered on May 8th 1865 by Confederate forces after only four days' siege! As Reconstruction ended and white flight began throughout southeastern Louisiana following the war,[1] Hamond experienced rapid growth due largely to Interstate 20 construction project which ran concurrent through town between 1960s and 1970s when highway development passed through area causing many businesses closure along with loss off jobs for local citizens[2]. Todayadays much evidence remains demonstrating how infrastructure investment led directly into economic decline during this time period especially around downtown areas where few job opportunities remain due lack thereof accesserily even though city officials have made efforts recently but gaps still exist[3], leading some locals such as Mayor Landry Arnaud estimate that "It’s not about crime; it’s about vacancy".[4] However despite these challenges many people still live and work in downtown areas including multiple restaurants & cultural institutions still open today despite being closed during earlier years[5],[6],[7]; WHSmith store remaining open since early 2010 despite experiencing significant loss due Katrina damage; numerous private businesses having reopened since then including several new housing developments popping up around town while others are expected next year; PGA golf tournament held every year since 1961 attracting thousands each year both amateur & professional golfers alike [8]; recent increase in business activity coming mainly from tourists visiting daily attractions such as Vietnamese restaurant next door which opened its doors almost two years ago [] Pierre Dorion Hammond started Settlement #1 southeast side OF BP gas field near Boca Raton Florida same place they built Kenner City Hall
