The early history of Hammond can be traced back to French explorers who traveled through this area during the earlycolonial period. In 1699, Jean-Baptiste de La Salle discovered what would become known as Lake Pontchartrain while exploring the area around Baton Rouge. La Salle named the body of water after General John Hammond who had led the French efforts to explore this area at that time. It should be noted that Hammond did not actually live in or visit this small village until 1851 when it became a part of Jefferson Parish under its new incorporation ordinance which followed Louisiana's admission into the United States following Reconstruction. Hammond experienced some significant growth during its early years thanks to its strategic location near both I-10 and New Orleans which made it an ideal spot for business and commerce.
