Fresh roasted coffee has been a part of Hammond, Louisiana for over 100 years. It is said that the first coffee beans were brought to Hammond by an Italian immigrant in 1864. The first roaster in Hammond was Mr. John Gallagher and his Sons. In 1924, Mr. Gallagher sold his business to Messrs. Wilkinson and Hildebrandt who continued to roast coffee until 1957 when it was sold to the current owners, the Holland Family. The Holland Family currently operates three roasters in Hammond: Heart Coffee Roasters, Cafe Orleans, and Dutch Bros Coffee & Tea Company which specializes in fresh-roasted Arabica beans from Africa and South America. The origins of coffee are complex but can be traced back to Africa where various types of seeds were planted centuries ago under different circumstances. When Europeans discovered Java island in 1613 they made contact with the local people who grew coffee trees and shared their knowledge with them. By 1795 Dutch traders had also started trading with Java which led to the introduction of new technology - a dropper - into Indonesia which helped increase coffee production there resulting in increased trade between India and Europe as well as gain access to new markets for spices such as cloves and cinnamon (which are now some of the world's most expensive spices). With all these factors at play, it is no wonder that some of history's most famous coffees came from Indonesia including Sumatra’s Civet cat (a wild animal known for its deep-fried doughnut) Beans; Java’s Kaffir lor (a type of fruit); India’s Andhra Pradesh ‘Chai’; Nigeria’s Unani ‘Kola Budwey’; or Ethiopia's Aksum 'Qawo'. The Hammond Coffee Company was founded in 1909 by John Hammond and his wife Sarah. The company started out as a small roaster, serving coffee to local businesses and individuals. In the 1920s, the Hammonds switched to beans from Africa and began production of their own espresso machine. By 1930, the company had grown so large that they moved their headquarters to what is now known as the Joe's Coffee Shop on US Highway 49 in Hammond. The business continued to grow through the years and in 1961, they became one of the first companies in Louisiana to be certified by The American Roasting Co.
Hammond is a small town in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie metropolitan statistical area. Hammond is the home of LSU's basketball and baseball teams as well as the Hammond-Webb High School football team. The first post office in Hammond was established on July 12, 1892. It served the community until 1959. The first store in Hammond was a general store that opened on October 15, 1893 by Sallie Burchill and her husband Heman Wiman. The store closed in 1915 due to competition from larger stores opening up around town. The first school in Hammond was a one-room school open on September 24, 1895 by Drury and Mrs. Loyd Dellinger with 17 studentsIn 1903, two schools were built: Northwood Elementary School which became Southmore Elementary School and Westlake Intermediate School which became Harbison Middle School; both schools remain operational today as charter schools operated by Academics Unlimited Incorporated (AUI). In 1906, George Crouch donated land to be used for an agricultural college that would later become LSU Tigers athletics director Robert Hebert's alma mater Tulane University . In 1932, the name of Academics Unlimited Incorporated changed from "Hammond Academy" to "Lafayette Community College". (This change came about because then-Lafayette Mayor Lamar Hunt wanted only Lafayette residents who lived near ULAD campuses to have access to Academics Unlimited programs.) Hamond CC acquired its present name when it merged with Louisiana State University -Shreveport (LSU) main campus' Business Administration Department on August 1st 1984 creating what is now known as “Mississippi Valley Central” or “MVC” Campus Complex located off I-10 exit 190 eastbound just north of US 165 south bound.(Undergraduate/Graduate students are currently enrolled at MSU - Shreveport.)) On December 16th 2009 Hurricane Gustav made landfall alongshore just outside of Hammond damaging some homes and businesses but no deaths were reported however damage did occur to university buildings including Reeves Physical Therapy Hospital which reopened after being closed for several weeks due to storm damage.(Storm Damage Restoration began approximately 10am this morning) Hammond has been inhabited since 1000 BC according to French colonial records . A fort known as Fort de la Beche d'Ouest was built here in 1769 during then Governor Louisiane 's effort against British forces occupying New Orleans . A road leading from Baton Rouge led through this fort into town where goods could be unloaded before being transported back out into the parish
