Hammond is a small town in northwestern Louisiana. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Hammond is located in Iberia Parish. Hammond is one of two parishes within the Atchafalaya Basin Regional Municipality. The first inhabitants of what is now Hammond were French colonists who arrived in 1763 and settled on the present day site of the community. The incorporation of Hammond into Orleans Parish occurred in 1824. In 1830, a post office called Hammond was established, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1930. In 1902, a bridge over the Atchafalaya River was constructed, forming part of the Louisiana Highway 82 corridor that connected Baton Rouge to New Orleans. The bridge represented an important development for Hammond because it allowed access to essential goods and services necessary for its growth as a rural community. Today, Hammond remains an agricultural center with substantial crops such as cotton, cornmeal, soybeans, etc., as well as poultry (eggs), cattle (hogs), and vegetables grown seasonally or year-round.
