Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of West Feliciana in central Louisiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of government for West Feliciana Parish and home to the Gretna Police Department. The department was founded in 1877 and has jurisdiction over an area that includes most of Gretna and parts of neighboring Webster and Lafourche parishes. The department's first sergeant was awarded a gold service revolver on January 1, 1880. The first woman on the force was Mrs. Belle Morton who worked for Ladd from 1928-1932 and then became sergeant in 1933; she retired in 1948 when her son Harry joined the police department along with her husband Homer Morton Jr.; they later moved to New Orleans where they died in 2002.)

Gretna has been inhabited since pre-historic times and its first recorded mention was in 1713 by French explorers as "Haute-Gretna". The community was founded by French immigrants in 1824, and until the early 20th century it was known simply as "Gretna". The area that now makes up Gretna grew around a cotton plantation called La Halleffe which operated from 1819 to 1865. Although most of the land originally belonged to the Plantation Owners and their descendants still live there today, much of what is now Gretna developed as a result of industry growth during Reconstruction. In 1870, American Manufacturing fortunes changed with the invention of interchangeable parts brought over by English entrepreneurs in an effort to increase efficiency in manufacturing plants across America. As new mills opened up throughout Louisiana they attracted workers from neighboring states who were drawn to good wages and easy access to education and job opportunities. By 1900, many people had settled here permanently because of various reasons including strategic location on both banks of the river for trade with surrounding counties; access to water resources for farming; and easy transportation via railroads into nearby towns like Jackson or Baton Rouge which made it possible for businesses to grow larger without having to leave their homes. During World War II Gretna became one of several communities along Louisiana's south shore that took part in the production process responsible for raising munitions used in combat overseas. Many residents worked at local armaments factories such as those run by Standard Oil Company or United States Rubber Company before returning home during peacetime to help rebuild their communities following war devastation. This return period also saw increased development around town - many businesses moved out into annexed areas near Lake Pontchartrain while others built larger facilities elsewhere within reach using profits generated from munitions production - helping make Gretna one of the most heavily industrialized cities in Louisiana during this time frame
