It lies on the Mississippi River and is bordered by Slidell to the northwest, Hammond to the northeast, and Baton Rouge to the southeast. Gretna was founded in 1819 by British colonists as an agricultural outpost on a bend in the river near present day Slidell. The name "Gretna" may be derived from a word meaning "land of plenty." The first store opened in 1835 and soon began growing into a thriving community that boasted a post office, schoolhouse, hotel, doctor's office and more than 20 businesses including groceries, mercantile stores and cotton ginners. In 1871 Gretna became one of five parish seats when it was organized as part of newly created Orleans Parish. The area around Gretna was inhabited for thousands of years before European exploration arrived in what is now Louisiana. Native American nations such as the Chitimacha continued to use this area for hunting and fishing grounds well into modern times. By 1800 French explorers had landed here seeking new routes through South America to Asia bypassing Spanish control at that time. After reaching this area through what is now Canada they named their discoveries "New France." From this point forward French explorers explored this region extensively writing about its natural resources and local Indian populations they encountered along their way.
