Gretna is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Jefferson Parish metropolitan area. The community is named after General Lafayette, who gave it its present name in 1810. At first called "Rouen", it was renamed to "Gretna" in honor of Admiral John Farragut and his successful campaign against British forces in 1804. As a result of the Battle of New Orleans on April 25, 1862 (the last major engagement fought before the American Civil War), Gretna became an important junction for Union and Confederate troops travelling between Alexandria and Jefferson City, Missouri. After 1863 when Union forces moved eastward from New Orleans, Gretna passed into Confederate hands until it fell to Union forces during the Siege of Fort Sumter on April 9, 1865. In 1870 Gretna's business district had 2 churches and 30 homes; by 1880 those numbers had increased to 104 churches and 1,150 homes with a population of 2,580 people. In 1910 there were 201 businesses in town with 553 residents; by 1920 that number had grown to 614 businesses with 1,028 residents. By 1930 there were 844 businesses with 3,500 residents; by 1940 that number had reached 489 businesses with 362 residents. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Gretna employed over 10% of all workers in Livingston Parish; by 1960 that figure had fallen to 5%. However since then the community has seen an increase in both housing stock and employment levels as various industries have arisen including information technology (information services†)††1 etc.,* but also agriculture‡‡§§1 health care†§§2†‰²*, manufacturing**4 etc.* There are currently no active factories or other significant employers within Gretna itself however this does not mean that there is no job market for any employees within the community – many local companies do produce products which could be exported if desired * Although most jobs now located outside of town
