Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Jefferson in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 7,441 at the 2010 census. The territory that would become Gretna was ceded to the United States by France in 1803 as part of the Treaty of Ghent. The area became part of the U.S. on July 4, 1959 when it was created as an independent city and parish by merging two other villages: Gretna East and Gretna West. Gretna's early history can be traced to 1789 when French colonists founded a trading post here after arriving from Quebec City. A year later, the post became known as "Grosse Pointe" (Large Point). In 1800, John Steuart established a ferry service between Gretna and New Orleans which continued until1830 when steamer navigation supplanted ferries as means of transportation between these two points. During this time period, there were also several plantations located within what is now Gretna limits including Plantation de la Rivière (later known as La Rivière Plantation) which was founded by Jean Lafitte around 1795; Plantation du Nord (later known as Baton Rouge Plantation); and Plantation de l’Ouest (later known as Chalmette plantation). By 1804, however, all three plantations had been abandoned due to advances in transportation methods including steamboats and railroads which made travel between these points much easier than it had been before. As a result of this new technology development, many businesses opened up throughout downtown Gretna during this era such as banks, hotels & stores while also creating numerous jobs for those who operated them. Additionally, School District No 1 began construction on what would become Century High School in 1898 while also hiring teachers and building classrooms for its students soon afterwards. Additionally during this time period another important event took place which led to increased trade activity along the Mississippi River because railroad entrepreneurs began traveling downriver looking for new business opportunities instead of waiting for vessels to dock at their various ports- an event later dubbed “The Great Railroad Famine†because so many businesses closed up shop due to competition from larger companies who could offer more efficient shipping methods at lower costs. This technological advancement led directly to increased traffic congestion along riverfronts throughout southern Louisiana resulting in decreased profits for small farmers who were unable to compete with larger enterprises definitionally speaking; although some did manage to maintain some level of profitability through innovative marketing practices such as roadside advertising or personal delivery orders utilizing horse drawn wagons complete with drivers/ Deliveries were popularized beginning in the late 19th century becoming increasingly common until superseded by Automobiles beginning in earnest starting around 1920s

Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Jefferson in the Orleans Parish region of Louisiana. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest settlements in Lafourche Parish and was founded by French colonists who were moving westward from their original land holdings in Acadia. The original name for Gretna was "Natchez". In 1819, when Lafourche Parish was created from parts of Orleans and Union Parishes, Gretna became part of that parish. The early years of Gretna's history were difficult as it competed with other towns for trade with New Orleans. However, through hard work and determination, Gretna slowly began to gain an reputation as a prosperous community. By 1830, business had begun to grow so much that a new courthouse and jail were built on the east side of town just north of current day Interstate 10. This courthouse served as court house until 1878 when it was replaced by the present-day courthouse which stands today on Elm Street adjacent to St John's Catholic Church (now known as Saints Peter & Paul Cathedral). During Reconstruction Era times, many African Americans moved into Gretna beginning in 1865 following passage of National Civil Rights Act which outlawed discrimination against black Americans by Southern states. They worked hard to rebuild their lives after being deprived of basic rights during the Jim Crow era. Many businesses flourished due to this influx into town including banks and grocery stores which helped support local economy during tough times. Today, Gretna remains a vibrant community that celebrates its heritage while striving for economic parity within society
