Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the Baton Rouge area of Louisiana. It is bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the north, the parish of Jefferson to the east, and St. Tammany Parish to the south. The population was 11,513 at the 2010 census. The history of Gretna goes back over two hundred years. The first settler in what is now Gretna was Captain John Baptiste who established a trading post in 1785. By 1806, there were three stores and sixty-four homes in Gretna. In 1815, Colonel Pierre Gustave Le Moyne founded a military academy here which served as an early model for many American universities such as Yale and Princeton. In 1865, General Edwin Booth attacked Fort Sumter during the American Civil War here in what is now Gretna; he was later killed here while fighting Confederate forces on July 9th of that year. The town was then taken by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant on November 9th of that year after they had liberated it from Confederate control; it remained under Union control until May 6th of 1865 when it reverted back to Confederate control following their victory over Union forces at Battle of Prairie Point near present day Lafayetteville). On January 1st, 1901 (just one week before Hurricane Alma hit), a tornado ripped through Gretna leaving destruction throughout most of downtown including most of shopwindows and extensive damage to abandoned buildings including several churches and schoolhouses; however no lives were lost or injured as a result of this tornado (the only major natural disaster in Louisiana that year). The tornado destroyed much more than just property though: thirteen businesses were damaged or destroyed along with four homes - all within one block of each other - making this one fatalities-freetornado event in Great Southern District history! Aftermath operations took weeks and involved both local volunteers and federal troops using bulldozers backed up by tanks to clear debris from streets leading into town square where business owners had set up shop hours earlier; before final cleaning could begin people started coming home again on Saturday morning fresh off work frying eggs at local restaurants for breakfast! As word spread about how well things had turned out locals quickly mobilized for another rebuild effort starting on Monday morning which continued until late Wednesday night when all but two structures were still standing thanks largely to numerous donations from across southern Louisiana including farmers who’d seen firsthand how difficult reconstruction can be given even short notice! Gretna, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. It is located on the Mississippi River opposite the Arkansas border. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It has been called by different names throughout its history, including White Settlement and Gretna Plantation. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gretna were French settlers who established a trading post there in 1768. By 1804, it had become an American settlement with a white population of about 350 people. In 1836, two years after America won independence from Great Britain, President Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. military headquarters from Fort Necessity on the Iberian Peninsula to Gretna for fear that British forces might gain an advantage over Americans in the region during their war against Mexico. In 1840, when New Orleans was founded as a city and Gretna became part of New Orleans County, most of the whites relocated to Gretna because it offered more opportunities for economic development than did smaller villages along the river mouth like Biloxi or Shreveport. However, many Germans also came to Gretna and began farming land around what would later become town limits while continuing their trade activities which helped make the community one of commerce and industry rather than agriculture and subsistence agriculture typical of rural areas near riverside towns in Deep South America where German immigrants had settled earlier in North America
