Gretna is a small town in Louisiana, located about 25 miles west of New Orleans. The population was 9,513 at the 2000 census. The community is named for General James H. “Grit” Gaillard and his family who donated land to the town in 1881. The original white residents were farmers and their families who cultivated crops and raised livestock until the early 20th century when industry began to take hold in Gretna, which led to new development. A large cotton gin was built here in 1904 and other businesses soon followed including a shoe store, grocery store, bank, post office, movie theater and more. A tornado touched down on Gretna on May 3rd of 1975 killing 12 people and injuring 58 others. It remains one of the most deadly tornadoes in Louisiana history. Today, Gretna is an active community with many businesses that contribute to its growth such as restaurants, banks, hotels and schools. The economy has boomed over the last several decades with employment high school graduate jobs leading the way. There are also numerous cultural events throughout the year such as carnivals and festivals that bring people together from all over Louisiana for fun reasons or business reasons alike

Gretna, Louisiana is located in the swamps of southeastern Louisiana. The city was founded by General Antonio Ladd in 1814 as a trading post on the Red River. By 1840, Gretna had become an important center for cotton production and commerce. In 1868, General Andrew Johnson ordered the evacuation of all civilians from all Confederate-held areas of the United States after the Battle of Gettysburg. The Union army marched into and destroyed Gretna, killing more than 100 people. The town never recovered from this tragedy and its population plummeted over the next few years. In 1901, the city was incorporated as a municipality under state law. However, Gretna experienced another setback during World War I when many of its residents enlisted in service to help secure victory over Germany. After the war ended, many returning veterans found that they could not find work or housing and decided to return home rather than continue struggling in a new economy that was still difficult to manage. The early 20th century also saw some advances in technology which helped spur economic development within Gretna. For example, stereoscopic photography became available for use in films in 1902 and led to increased profits for cinema owners throughout central and eastern Louisiana. Also during this time period, baseball began to be played at local schools as part of autumn recess programs; later becoming an important part of community lifeand shaping young individuals’ perspectives about their place within society During World War II, Gretna again made history when it became one of only two U.S.-controlled cities remaining after Japan's surrender unconditionally following American military forces' bombings across Japanese-occupied territory including Hiroshima and Nagasaki . A number of businesses were reopened following the war but due to high unemployment rates among wartime veteransreturning home there remained little actual growth until well into the 21st century Today, remnants of downtown Gretna still stand along with several older buildings dating back to before 1800s including Holy Cross Catholic Church (founded 1798), St Peters Episcopal Church (1811), State Capitol Building (established 1868), Post Office (established 1865), Masonic Temple (1867) and Recorders House(1901). Most notable is Checkerboard Hall now used as a museum which functioned as both schoolhouse & court house from 1875-1900
