Eunice, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Eunice is named after General James Eunice who fought against Spanish forces in the early 18th century. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and began being developed as a settlement around 1770. By 1800, it had a population of 300 people and was known as "the little village on the Ouachita." In 1821, Captain John Fayette founded Fort Fayette here to resist French efforts to expand their holdings into what would become Mississippi Territory. Although unsuccessful, this event helped to spur further development in Eunice and its surrounding areas. In 1849, General Nathaniel Banks ordered Colonel Fabius Keyes to resettle Native American families near Monroe and Bienville counties in order to prevent them from joining French forces during the Indian Wars that were ongoing at that time. Consequently, many of these natives converted to Christianity and moved northeastward into what became Rapides Parish. By 1860-1861, there were only about 90 residents living in Eunice proper; however, 12 miles (19 km) south of town along I-10 there was an additional 50 or so settlers established by Major George Prentice who had purchased 640 acres (256 ha) east of present day Eunice from Jean Lafitte for $5 per acre! This land extended all the way downriver towards New Orleans where it formed part of La Salle's colony - later becoming part of Orleans Parish! Eunice, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of St. Martin in the parishes of Iberia and Lafourche. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of government for St. Martin Parish. The name Eunice comes from an aboriginal word meaning "peaceful place." The first white settlers landed in what is now Eunice in 1765 and built a cabin on a bend in the river that became known as Old Eunice. In 1802, they founded New Eunice and developed it into a large town with over 2,000 residents by 1828. New Eunice was destroyed by a flood in 1892 but rebuilt quickly with new housing and businesses including several stores, churches, schools and hospitals. By 1906, when Louisiana statehood was granted to Louisiana under the Constitution of 1901, New Eunice had become one of the states’ capital cities because it served as both its governor's mansion (from 1865 to 1889) and its seat during legislative sessions (until 1959). In 1960, however, following Hurricane Ike which devastated parts of Southeast Louisiana including New Orleans,[1] New Orleans again became the capital city with Eunice serving as its second-largest community after Baton Rouge. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture products such as corn oilseed production and hog meat export; however there are also some recent businesses established in downtown Eunice such as Bottega Veneta clothing store which opened in early 2018.[2][3][4] There are also numerous cultural attractions located throughout town such as Artspace Gallery[5], Baptist church[6], Museum of Fine Arts[7] and old cotton gin buildings used for storage or offices today but once home to local farmers markets during agricultural seasons; various restaurants have been sprouted up around downtown since 2009 including Frontera Grill,[8] Jardim Azul Mexican restaurant[9], Rum Runner’s Tavern[10] The economy has diversified somewhat recently through job growth within government services like health care administration; education; law enforcement; accounting firms etc., while retains many rural character traits through subsistence farming practices still common today among Acadian/Cajuns
