Eunice, Louisiana is home to the United States Army Garrison of Shreveport. The garrison was founded in 1865 and is one of the oldest Army installations in the country. It has a population of over 10,000 soldiers and sailors and serves as an important strategic location for military operations in Louisiana and Mississippi.
Eunice, LA is a town in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Jackson Parish. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,715. The name comes from English "eunuch," meaning "a man who has not had intercourse." The area that became Eunice was acquired by France in 1729 as part of La Salle's attempt to open up New France to settlement by Europeans. In 1803, Eunice was named for Maj.-Gen Pierre-François Marie de Laclède, Comte d'Eu (1727-1802), Governor of Canada during the period when British controlled North America and director general of French Acadia and Louisiana. The first white settler in what is now Eunice was Isaac Goodloe, who arrived there on July 14, 1803; he organized a small community called Clearwater before his death on September 16th at the age of 36 years old. His wife Deborah Ann Goodloe donated land for a church and cemetery in 1807. The first Baptist chapel opened its doors on October 3rd, 1808; it is still active today and serves as an important cultural center in Eunice. In 1830, following complaints from Native Americans about white farmers burning their crops or taking their animals without permission, General Andrew Jackson ordered all Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River to be burned down beginning on November 1st; this action resulted in thousands dead or enslaved Indians being killed or captured en route into what are now Missouri and Texas (the territory later became Oklahoma). That year also saw the founding of Lousiana by Pierre Charles Le Moyne de St John D'Iberville (1758-1826), commanding officer at Iberville Barracks on Mobile Bayou near present day Lafayette; St John purchased 4200 acres (1/4 mile²) east side of Assumption River from Judge Edward Kirby Chase for $650 which he sold to DeWitt Clinton on December 12th 1828. Eunice is a small town in the parish of Vernon in Claiborne County, Louisiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The nearby city of New Iberia is home to Eunice's largest employer, the New Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office. The town was founded by Frenchmen on December 14, 1805 as "Houma." It was named for Madame de Staël, Countess of Houma (1765-1837), wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Houma served as the capital of Louisiana from 1785 to 1804 and became known as the "Queen City" after its residents won their independence from Spain in 1803. The town built its first school in 1811 and a courthouse in 1827. In 1840, it incorporated as a village under the name "Eunice." In 1861, it renamed itself "New Iberia," which remained its legal name until it changed it back to Eunice in 1982. In 1865, General Braxton Bragg marched through Eunice on his way to Baton Rouge and stopped there for lunch before continuing his march eastward. During this time period, much of what is now New Iberia was destroyed by Hurricane Edwin which struck during that same year. Eunice has experienced many natural disasters over the years including hurricanes Katrina and Rita; both floods occurred within two weeks of each other in 2005; an EF5 tornado struck on November 15th 2001; and a severe thunderstorm outbreak killed four people on September 25th 2006 just blocks from Main Street.
