The coffee industry in Deridder, Louisiana began in the early 1800s. The first coffee beans were grown on a small plantation by the name of Deering. The beans were roasted and packaged by two men, John and Harry Deering. By 1894, the Deering family had sold their business to another man named Hogue. Hogue began to make larger batches of coffee and started to sell it throughout the state of Louisiana. In 1927, Hogue's son, Floyd Hogue, founded a company that would continue making quality coffees until his death in 1984. In the 1920s and 1930s, Deridder was home to one of the largest roasting companies in Louisiana. The company was called New Orleans Coffee Company and its employees roasted all types of coffee- from dark chocolate to Ethiopian Yirgacheffe- for sale throughout the state. During these years, Deridder also became known as "the birthplace of espresso." From 1934 until 1957, Angelo Bacco ran what is now considered one of America's most important espresso shops- located at 2729 Magazine Street in downtownDeridder. Bacco was responsible for creating some of modern day espresso history such as using Constantia beans which are now world heritage status from Italy. He also created many variants of Italian Espresso like Lungo (long) or Ratzinger (light). These days however Bacco's shop is closed down and mostly used for storage purposes- much like Angelo himself! In recent years, Deridder has seen an increase in coffee production due to its location close to major brewing facilities across central Louisiana. In 2017, a new coffee factory called Gourdine opened up just east of town near Loyola University School Of Medicine with plans to produce over 100 metric tons per year of exportable coffeebeans- making it one of the largest single investments ever made intoDeridder’s economy!

The city's fortunes changed with World War II when it became home to the USAAF Air Force Base Camp Claiborne (later known as Downdraft AFB). After the war Deridder experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for New Orleans; however, during Hurricane Katrina its decline began. In recent yearsDeridder has regained some popularity due to its vibrant cultural scene and rich history dating back to pioneers such as John Derbyshire who came from Derridder in 1811 and established cotton plantations there.

Today, Deridder is an important cultural center for the region because it features several interesting museums including the National Museum of African American History & Culture and the Louisiana Folklife Center. Additionally,Deridder is known for its annual Jazz Festival which attracts many musicians from around the world to perform at one of North America's largest jazz festivals.
