Deridder, Louisiana is the smallest of the twelve parishes in New Orleans. It was named for General David Deridder, a Union general who fought in the American Civil War. The city of Deridder was founded by French colonists in 1765. The area that now makes up Deridder was part of what is nowoutlet Louisiana before it became a parish in 1804. The first white settlers to arrive in Deridder were men from Kentucky and Tennessee who came overland from Kentucky on horseback during the summer of 1805. They built a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River and called their settlement Fort derridder. In 1806, General John C. Frémont, commander of United States forces in northern Mexico, reached Fort derridder and discovered land that would become Deridder Parish. He organized the town into a government under his command and named it after himself, General David Derridaer (or David Herritage). The town prospered until around 1830 when there were several epidemics of smallpox which caused many people to leave for fear they would catch the disease. By 1840, only 10 percent of residents still lived within derridDER boundaries; most had moved westward into other parishes or outlying areas near New Orleans. In 1849, New Orleans was enlarged by splitting off Algiers Parish east of Canal Street into its own entity; this created new districts including Houma and Monterey Park along with parts of Jefferson Noirmont and Chalmette known as West Side Story Districts because much development took place within these boundaries between 1850 and 1860: commerce flourished thanks to heavy investment by Houston investors in cotton plantations north-central Louisiana; nevertheless progress also slowed due to increasing competition from slaveowning Southern states; white migration continued slowly westward until African Americans began arriving here beginning with enslaved black workers on large plantations during Reconstruction period (1870-1877). By 1870 total population was 3,500 while number living below poverty line stood at 100% In 1880 there were 1,000 blacks working on farms while whites comprised only 33%of population By 1930 census total population reached 12K with black majority at 38%.
