Deridder, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,698 at the 2010 census. Deridder is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1874. It grew rapidly after the opening of the Atchafalaya River flood plain in 1902. A cotton gin and other industries were established in Deridder during the 1920s and 1930s; however, they all closed by the end of World War II because of competition from synthetic fiber plants in nearby New Orleans and Baton Rouge. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many African Americans migrated to Deridder as part of an effort to find work outside of white dominated plantations. The black population increased gradually until World War II when it peaked at around 30%. After 1945 there was a dramatic decrease in black resettlement due to lack of jobs and rising housing prices within white neighborhoods across New Orleans metropolitan area. In derridder's early days most people were farmers or their families petit-bourgeois who raised chickens or pigs on their property while working off their farm debt to banks which had financing for crops but no money lending for housing developments so that these new settlers could buy homes instead once they got a job with wages rather than farming for subsistence goals only In recent decades some businesses have reopened such as KB Toys (a retailer specializing in toys for children), which opened its first store here since 2009; Happy Dog Pizza (a pizza restaurant chain based out of Illinois) opened its first store here since 2004; movie theater Cineplex Odeon Plaza reopened its doors after being closed for several years due to financial problems; local artist Jimmie Vaughan has been exhibiting his art galleries throughout the parish through 2017

The first settler in Deridder was Jean Baptiste Biron, who arrived in 1810. In 1812, Dieudonne Bienville moved to the town from Alexandria. The first school in Deridder was built in 1814. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded through New Orleans and occupied Deridder and other PARishes until he was driven out by Union forces two years later. The post office atDeridDER was established on December 2, 1872; it remained open until it closed on November 15, 1906. The first postmaster was Amedee Picardy-Lafitte. DeridDER had a population of 707 as of the 2000 census; its populationtotal has since decreased to 682 according to the 2010 census estimate
