Deridder, Louisiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Louisiana. The population was 3,694 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1853 by eight Dutch families who came to what is now the state of Louisiana from Waaland, Netherlands. The first store in Deridder was established by Isaac A. Goode and his brother-in-law John Larkin on Second Street. In 1865, Joris van der Laan opened a grocery in Deridder which became one of the most important businesses in the town until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1874, Captain Harry Wessels made an unsuccessful attempt to build a railroad through Deridder and its adjacent communities but he did succeed in building a road into nearby Webster Parish. This road led directly to New Orleans and made it much easier for goods and people to get around without going through Deridder or Webster Parish. When World War II started, many American soldiers who were stationed overseas returned home and needed food so they started supermarkets such as GASCOA COFFEE (now known as Walmart). As coffee became more popular among troops during World War II, large quantities of beans were shipped back from America to be roasted and packaged for shipment back home. One such supermarket was Fritsch's Grocery which operated from 1945 until it closed its doors in 1976 due to competition from Kroger supermarkets with better prices for coffee products . The war also caused a decline in production at some local coffee plantations because so many workers were drafted or sent away to fight instead of able to work their farms . However, throughout all these years coffee beans remained high quality because farmers had been able to perfect roasting techniques that resulted in very light cups of coffee that tasted delicious despite having low levels of caffeine . After World War II ended there was an increase not just of Starbucks but also Dunkin' Donuts stores opening up all over America creating even more competition for good quality coffee beans . During this time frame too much heat was being used on coffees resulting not just in bitterness but also dryness and an inability for them to develop flavor ..
