Deridder, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General Lafayette and his wife Marie de la Motte-Allier (1763-1836), who had been née in Amiens, France and immigrated to America in 1785 with her husband Jean Baptiste La Motte. Afterward she married General James Deridder (1768-1843), an officer during the American Revolution and a member of the Council of Five Hundred who helped organize New Orleans after its evacuation from British hands on June 14, 1793. Deridder's first store opened in 1807 on what is now St. Bernard Street between Third and Fourth Streets. A post office called Deridder was established in 1827; it later became part of New Orleans. The community grew rapidly due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Saint Francisville and Baton Rouge for agricultural production as well as its access to water resources necessary for growing crops such as cotton and sugar cane. Development continued through the late 19th century with the construction of railways into eastern Jefferson Parish by oil refiners looking for access to markets outside New Orleans; this increased Deridder's importance within the parish as well as nationally. Deridder, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in the southern region of Louisiana. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Deridder was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a post on a bend in the river delta of the lower Iberian Peninsula known as "Dieu-des-Anges." The name was derived from an Irish word meaning "the saint's feet." The first white settlers arrived in Deridder in 1736 and it became a thriving agricultural community with markets and schools. In 1803, Deridder joined Baton Rouge Parish. In 1832, it became one of three parishes within Rapides Parish when that parish was created from parts of two other parishes, Laclede and St. Bernard du Port. In 1863, Deridder received its official incorporation as a village under then Governor John C. Breaux’s executive order No. 527 which designated all incorporated villages in Louisiana “freehold townships” subject to the same civil and criminal jurisdiction as unincorporated villages located within their corporate boundaries without such rights or privileges as those enjoyed by cities or towns having been organized for similar purposes since before any law existed providing for municipal government save for certain limited exercises by justices thereof; but no right to vote or hold office were granted to inhabitants thereof until they should choose to become citizens by paying taxes according to rate provided for townships elsewhere in this commonwealth…. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much of what had been built up during Reconstruction years and Deridder slowly reverted back to subsistence farming conditions after815 individuals abandoned their homes during that decade due primarily to lack of opportunity and money combined with then high rates for land acquisition throughout most rural areas including rapides parish
