The first Europeans to visit Deridder were the French in 1722 when they set up a trading post on the riverbank. The post was abandoned in 1724 because of French and Indian War hostilities. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Deridder on their way from Baton Rouge to Mobile Bay. In 1849, John Quincy Adams created Jefferson Parish from parts of Lafourche and St Tammany parishes east of the Mississippi River. On July 26, 1851, Deridder incorporated as a town under the name "Deridder". The first mayor was J D McCullough (1851-58). The town experienced several floods during the 1930s due to heavy rains that caused flash flooding throughout much of Louisiana. In 1935 Hurricane Betsy destroyed most of derridder's infrastructure; however, damage done by Hurricane Katrina five years later restored some semblance of normalcy. According to the 10-year UCR study "Living Conditions and Economic Development in Metairie & DeridDER", conducted between 1990 and 2000, "the rate at which businesses have grown since 1990 has been more than three times that of any other parish within Orleans Parish." As a result of this growth rate over time (and specifically thanks to Interstate 12), "residential values have increased by an average annual compounded growth rate greater than 20%, while commercial values have increased more than 50%. This trend indicates that economic development is having an impact on community affiliation and social fabric." Deridder is located at .
