Denham Springs is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. Denham Springs has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The community was founded in 1875 by Scottish immigrants who named it for General James Denham, who served as commander of United States forces in Mexico during the American-Mexican War. The Scotsmen brought with them their kilts and Dunfermline whisky which they distilled into brands like Glenlivet and Stewart's Craigellachie. In 1886, J.M. McConnell opened McConnell & McDonald mercantile store in what is now the business district of Denham Springs. McConnell & McDonald became one of the most successful commercial enterprises in parish history until its closure in 1978 due to financial difficulties. In 1903, Denham Springs residents erected a local post office adjacent to present day US Highways 90 and 157 which still stands today. The first mail delivery arrived here on May 8, 1903 by stagescoop from Alexandria via Paducah before continuing onward by wagon train to New Orleans; this was an important milestone as USPS service between Baton Rouge and Dauphin Parish had been suspended because of World War I hostilities. In 1915, Wernher von Braun donated land near present day Huffman Elementary School for use as a launching pad for his V-2 rocket program that would ultimately lead to humanity's first contact with extraterrestrial life . . . much later! Denham Springs is a small community in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The community was established in 1855 as a small farming village named Newtonville and had a post office from 1859 to 1865. The name Denham Springs may derive from an early settler, William Denham, who purchased land there in 1836. The community site was surveyed by J.D. Denham and his son-in-law Hernando Peebles in 1846 and submitted to government for approval that year. Denham Springs first received its own water supply source in 1854 when a canal was built through the community for irrigation purposes. In 1870, the town plat was amended to include lands east of I-10 on which it would be built later that year; this included the current day site of Denham Springs Village. The population of Denham Springs peaked at 2,912 in 1930 but has declined since then due to factors such as loss of jobs within New Orleans and increased commuting distances outside of the city center following Hurricane Katrina. However, recent growth has seen renewed interest in the town with plans to add an additional thousand residents over the next few years; however, denials by local officials regarding any potential annexation have hindered these efforts thus far
