Denham Springs is a small community located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,862 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Denham Springs was first settled by Acadians in 1727. They moved from present-day Quebec to what is now Livingston Parish after the British Invasion of North America. The area became known for its rich phosphate deposits, and later for cotton production. In 1868, Denham Springs was incorporated as a town. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Denham Springs experienced heavy growth due to its location at the intersection of two important railroads: the New Orleans and Texas Railway (now part ofTransportation Network Solutions) and the Stroudsburg Railroad. Manufacturing businesses grew along with it, creating jobs for locals and contributing to denominal growth in Denham Springs over time. During World War II, many African Americans served in various roles in Louisiana’s military; some worked their way up through service ranks while others were drafted into service during wartime. Many black men who did serve went on to contribute significantly to Denham Springs during peacetime as well – including entrepreneur James Fenton (1921-2009), author Toni Morrison (1932-2012), civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael (1925-1982), businessperson Bobby Mitchell (brought up in nearby East Baton Rouge Parish), basketball player Julius Erving (1937-2005) and football player Lloyd Carr (1920-2001). It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by General Denham in 1813 as a post office on the east bank of the Mississippi River. In 1824, it became the capital of Livingston Parish and Denham Springs became its seat. The first cotton gin in Louisiana was built here in 1830 by James Rankin and others; it operated until 1840. In 1867, Denham Springs became part of Rapides Parish and its name changed to Rapides County. In 1976, it merged with adjacent parish to form Livingston Parish again.
