The United States Army Civil Defense Corps (CDP) was activated on October 25, 1941 and assigned to the Louisiana National Guard. The CDP evolved from the Red Cross Society of Denham Springs, which had been organized in 1938. At its inception, the CDP consisted of a core group of volunteer firefighters who formed identification cards and carried an emergency flare to indicate their presence during a natural disaster or time of war. On November 5, 1941 the first military deployment occurred when 2nd Lt. Sidney Sager and his unit arrived in Denham Springs to provide support for local militia efforts against invading Japan. On December 8th, Captain Harry Pritchard's unit responded to a request for assistance from the Sheriff Department after several citizens were abducted by masked gunmen at gunpoint outside a grocery store. That same day two soldiers from Texas A&M University's 9th Infantry Battalion were also sent to help with security at LSU campus after Japanese-American students staged a sit-in protest there. In early 1942 service members began arriving in greater numbers as World War II got underway. In response to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's call for all Americans tojoin arms, approximately 1,000 soldiers arrived in Louisiana between January and May 1942; these soldiers were later reassigned back east as part of General George Marshall's plan called "Giant Waves" which aimed to bolster Allied defenses in Europe during the early stages of World War II. On June 6th Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Riddle ordered all CDP volunteers into service with local Armed Forces units across Louisiana as part of national defense guidelines mandated by Congress following Pearl Harbor Attack America was now involved in conflict on two fronts - one within our own borders and one abroad where we had no choice but to participate under duress! As wartime progressed both civilian and military contributions became more pronounced at Denham Springs; however it is difficult not to focus exclusively upon the role thatArmy troops played within our community during this pivotal period! Just prior To their departure for overseas duty some Soldiers donated new coats, ties and other items they had acquired while stationed here; these donations helped shape what would become known as “The Army Gift History” Museum project which opened its doors on September 10th, 1984! The museum chronicles army deployments over forty years through artifacts, photos and stories from those who experienced them firsthand!

Denham Springs is a small town in the southeastern corner of Louisiana. It is located on the west bank of the Arkansas River, about 30 miles from Baton Rouge and 100 miles from New Orleans. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. The Denham Springs community was named after General Nicholas Denham, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as president of Louisiana. After his death in 1874, his wife, Anna Maria French Denham (1802-1875), donated land to make up what is now the town. She had been married to General John C. Denham (1798-1881), one of Napoleon Bonaparte's generals during World War I and an uncle of Franklin D. Roosevelt. As early as 1805, French settlers had arrived in what is now Denham Springs with some 200 families; they built a trading post near present day Benning Road and White Street. By 1830, there were over 1,000 residents living in this part of Rapides Parish; by 1860 it had grown to 2,500 people. In 1872 Mrs. Anna Maria French Denham donated 10 acres (40 hectares) on which she erected a small log cabin known as "the Hermitage". For many years this isolated spot provided much needed shade for local farmers while they grew crops or fished for catfish on the riverbank upstream; today it remains a popular spot for picnics and swimming downstream from its original location near present day US Highway 362 bridge over the Arkansas River just north of town limits (access via Old US Highway 362 road).
