In 1948, with the activation of USAF Strategic Command, 1st BW moved to Yuma Proving Grounds and became responsible for strategic bombardment of military targets in North America. In 1951, 1st BW organized into wings and became 2nd Bombardment Wing (2BW). With this change in command came a new set of gifts from members of the USAF community. In 1957, 2BW activated 3rd Bomber Wing (3BW) which was responsible for strategic bomber operations over Europe. The wing's first gift was a Boeing E-8 Joint STARS aircraft which arrived at Denham Springs on May 25, 1957. The 3BW also received two McDonnell Douglas MD-4H fighter jets during this time period. Throughout its existence, 3BW has bestowed numerous gifts upon its members including an F-15 Eagle jet fighter aircraft from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company; an A-10 Warthog attack plane from Lockheed Martin Corporation; two KC-135 Stratotankers from Boeing Company; two E-4C Skymaster visual reconnaissance planes; one Bell 47A helicopter; four Cessna 182s; and eight HH-60P Sea Hawk helicopters! On July 1, 1992, 2BWactivated 4th Bomber Wing (4BW) which became responsible for strategic bombing operations over Europe once again. This organization received their first gift when they received an F/A-18E Super Hornet airframe from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company. During its tenure 4BW has bestowed numerous Gifts upon their Members including an F/A -18E Super Hornet jet fighter aircraft from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company; an EA -6B Prowler maritime patrol plane from Raytheon Co., Inc.; two KC -47N Lark aerial refueling tanker planes; one Beechcraft 1900D Jetliner Airliner; four Cessna 172s donated by FedEx Express Airlines Inc.; one Sikorsky SH-3R Hokusai Helicopter purchased as a replacement for another SH-3R that had been lost while serving as part of Operation Desert Storm flying combat support missions!
