In 1977, the Navy transferred control of Crowley Naval Air Station to Louisiana State University. Crowley is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crowley is located in Bossier Parish and is bordered by Rapides Parish to the east, Jefferson Parish to the north, St Tammany Parish to the northwest, and Chalmette Parish to the southwest. The first inhabitants of Crowley were Fulks Indians who landed there on November 5, 1718 according to one account.[1] On December 1, 1772, French navigator Jean-Baptiste La Salle sighted a shipwreck near Crowley on his way southward from New Orleans towards Mobile Bay. He named it Notre Dame de la Sainte-Baume (Our Lady of Mount Carmel). A plaque marking this event still stands near US 66 which runs through Crowley. In 1802 St John's Episcopal Church was built on what is now US 66 across from Crowley High School; it became known as "The Hill". In 1837 a schoolhouse was built along what is now FM 962 east of town limits; it became known as "The Old School House". The first post office in Crowley opened on July 3, 1840 under name Red Bank with James Fenton serving as Postmaster until 1861 when he moved to Lafayetteville with his family. On January 10, 1863 Confederate General Pemberton ordered all Union posts throughout Louisiana be evacuated except for those in Bossier and Lafourche parishes west of Baton Rouge; these posts remained garrisoned until February 25th when they surrendered unconditionally without battle or resistance. At that time only five percent of LSU's students were located within eight miles of downtown Shreveport amassing an enrollment totaling only 468 men out of a total campus population estimated at 24,000 menrington during this period[2]. This single event created chaos for local officials who had no choice but to evacuate their men although Cotton Mather predicted that "the Confederacy will not long survive" because "...the people cannot stand up against numbers".[3] On May 8th 1860 Isaac Brockman erected an grove of oak trees at what is now US 66 & FM 962 just outside present day Crowley limits; later renamed Oak Grove Cemetery after him & remains are also found in neighboring Rapides parish today which may have been planted by him specifically for this purpose[4]. All Saints Roman Catholic Church constructed between 1888 - 1893 atop an old sawmill/grinding mill site adjacent to present day Crowley nosebleeds remain one of most enduring tourist attractions in southLouisiana[]-. Many institutions such as Southern University (now UL Lafayette) were founded or relocated here including: Ulysses S Grant Military Academy (1882), Tulane University (1896), Sam Houston State Teachers College (1913), Central State Normal School (1920), Masonic Temple Building Boarding House/Masonic lodge No 627(1924) among others[]-. also many farmers & ranchers established themselves here over time []... resultant growth has led both physically & economically [to] its current location[] . . . today's resident provide essential services such as police forces fire departments ambulance services schools etc., leaving little slack for development elsewhere []... community spirit pervades daily life everywhere you look[]."

The first school in Crowley was built in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. The city of Crowley was established on November 1, 1851 by charter from the Louisiana Legislature. It was named after Capt. David Crowley, who had been killed at battles during the Mexican-American War and whose death had moved many people to establish what is now known as Crescent City County". In 1865, Rev. John Jarratt became pastor of Sts Peter's Episcopal Church located in downtown Crowley; this church served as the cornerstone of city hall until 1912 when it burned down. During World War II most residents chose to remain within Crescent City County or move away to areas such as New Orleans or Baton Rouge due to shortages of food and other necessities brought about by the war effort. However, some people did cross over into Mexico because they were unable to find food back home or because they feared reprisals if they reported any problems back home (euphemistically called "German bombing"). A few notable exceptions include Harry Houdini and his wife Eva May Gabor which led to much public curiosity about their escape from Auschwitz concentration camp during Operation Crossroads on October 29th 1944; unfortunately neither man made it out alive! Since its establishment in 1951, Crescent City has experienced many changes both good and bad: population growth (from 15 hundred total residents in 1951 to over 30 thousand today), economic development (including manufacturing businesses moving into town since opening up new business districts), various types of housing developments (residential subdivisions being erected throughout town with more than one story buildings becoming increasingly common), an increasing number of social services offered through local government entities like libraries/ parks/ playgrounds/etc., etc., etc... All told these have resulted in an increase not only size but also variety of life within Crescent City while preserving its unique character
Crowley was founded in 1829 by James Crowley, a man from Kentucky. The town was named for Crowley's ancestor, who had been killed in a hunting accident in Louisiana. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1875, the town had a population of 350 people and it became an agricultural center. In 1916, the Crowley-Lafayette Parish School Board became the first school district to be organized in Louisiana. The Crowley-Lafayette Parish Library opened its doors in 1951.
