Crowley is a small town in western Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is named after Crowley's Well, which was discovered by Captain John Smith in 1617 and later used as a military camp. The well was also used to supply water for the town. The community was founded in 1881 by David Ransom and his wife, Meta Ransom. It had a population of about 100 people when it became incorporated. In 1907, the town merged with nearby White Sulphur Springs to form an enlarged Crowley. In 1920, Crowley annexed part of neighboring Greenville Township and began to build a shopping center which would include a grocery store, hardware store, post office and diner. The development was finished in 1924 and is currently known as the Masonic Temple Complex. In 1984-85, donations from local businessmen led to the construction of a new high school which serves Crowley residents as well as surrounding towns. The Crowley Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1893; it has since become one of East Louisiana's most important fire departments with over 1,000 members who serve annually at least six times per month including seven weekend shifts during summer months Crowley is also home to several smaller businesses such as Lighthouse Baking Co., Cory's Jewelry & Gifts (a familyowned business), First Baptist Church (founded 1870) and Holy Cross Catholic Church (established 1865). Crowley is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,592 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Crowley was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1835 and named after one of their number, Samuel Winchester Crowley. The first settler in what is now Crowley was John Bogle who arrived in 1839. A post office called Crowley was established in 1846 and remained open until it closed in 1907. In 1860, Reverend Jens Jensen circulated an invitation for men to come to his farm to purchase land for themselves or their families on which they could build outhouses and homesteads. By 1865 there were ninety-five residents living here. In 1870 local man James Gourlay purchased 2,000 acres (8 km²) of land around present day Crowley from the Laclede brothers as part of a larger deal that also included 3,000 acres (12 km²) adjoining modern day Slidell and 1/2 mile (1 km²) east of present day Thibodaux. He built a log cabin near today's junction of US 249 and FM 1093 about three miles west of town on this property where he lived until his death in 1922. Gourlay's heirs sold the land to Lafayette Land & Improvement Company which developed it into what is now Crowley County Park . In 1895 local farmers Wm Henson and Geo Brainard donated 5acres (16 ha) south from the original centerlineofthe county lineto confer upon Rural Cemetery with burying privileges on all citizens male over age 16 having resided within five years next preceding election date; thenceforward all burials within said Cemetery were free to any citizen without charge ThereafterBurial ground became known as "Henson's Grove".
