In Crowley, Louisiana, the history of coffee begins with French press coffee. The first French presses were made in 1847 in a small town called Crowley. Coffee began to be brewed at this location for sale to local farmers and businesses. Crowley was founded by Frenchman Maurice Richard in 1828. He built a sawmill and plantation near present-day Crowley and started to grow coffee. In 1849, he opened the first French roast roastery in America. This business became known as "Maurice's Coffee." Richard continued to produce great quality coffee until his death in 1865. The Richards family continued to run the business until it was sold to C&H Coffee Company in 1912. The company produced high-quality coffee until 1971 when it merged with Roasters Incorporated of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania into American National Corporation (ANP). At American National Corporation, coffee production shifted from SCAFFE beans to Sumatra beans and eventually Arabica beans which gave rise to Crowley's current appellation of "America's First Arabica Roaster".
Crowley is a town in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan area. Crowley is located on Interstate 10 about halfway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The first white settler in Crowley was John Sutherlin in 1802. He named it after him and his wife Sarah Winchester (1797-1869), who had been born in England to a family of Quakers. In 1905, Crowley was incorporated as a town by an act of the Louisiana State Legislature. It became one of eight towns consolidated into Shreveport–Bossier City on July 1, 1966. The town's name comes from MajorGeneral James Knoppers' order for all troops east of Alexandria to march through Crowley to join General Ziegfeld's show at Madison Square Garden on April 30, 1865. Crowley has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) with hot summers and mild winters; average monthly temperatures range from . According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Crowley has a humid subtropical climate type known as "Awa" which means that "the average annual precipitation ranges from 100 millimeters (3 inches) or less per year to more than 500 millimeters (24 inches) per year".

By 1978, over 25 percent of Americans had their own personal cupola grinder/filter press capable of making whole Bean Coffee at home! Today's fresh roasted coffees come from many different origins including Africa (where some regions use 2000 year old Arabica beans), Latin America (where Typico Obscenea trees are grown), Asia (where Sumatra and East Timor coffees are popular), South America (including Brazil's Pernod Ricardobased Coffees), and Australia & New Zealand (which produce quality Robusta Beans). Each region has its own unique flavor profile that can be traced back to the specific place where it was grown - resultantly creating an incredibly diverse range of flavors that can only be found fresh roasted on site!
