The 1st Brigade, 5th Division of the United States Infantry was stationed here from 1898-1901 during the Spanish-American War. The brigade was redesignated as the 1st Brigade, 9th Infantry in 1901 and then again in 1941 as the 1st Brigade, 7th Infantry. It was disbanded in 1944.

Crowley, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by John Crowley and his brother-in-law, James P. Haughton. The town was named for John’s older brother, Daniel Crowley. The first post office in the town was called “Crowleyville” and opened on July 1, 1836. By 1840, Crowley had a population of about seventy residents. In 1849, Stephen Fenton bought Cunningham County from the government for $1,000 cash. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself in Crowley after retreating from Baton Rouge. On January 2nd of that year, he issued an order authorizing all arms and munitions to be brought into the county within three days of its establishment as an independent government under the command of General Ewell’s headquarters at Covington Parish. Soon afterwards Union General Ambrose Burnside arrived with an army and seized control of the area between La Salle Parish and Crowley County Line. On February 5th Burnside ordered all men within two miles of his encampment to surrender or leave their homes immediately without giving any warning to their families or children. A group consisting chiefly of elderly men women and children were able to Escape unharmed but nine men were killed while running away; these deaths outraged Confederates who considered them martyrs.) On March 3rd President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation ordering all Confederate soldiers in Louisiana must evacuate the state or face military punishment; this order caused great excitement throughout America because it threatened to cause civil war between abolitionists and pro-Confederate forces in central Louisiana. Aftermath: Many people chose to stay put rather than move out because they did not want their property confiscated by Union troops who would then likely burn down their homes or worse! As a result, most residents today still live in what is now known as "Johnstown" which is located off US 190 east of Crowley; however business has recently started up again near US 90 so it's worth checking out some more recent history if you're looking for information on local landmarks!

The town was founded in 1892 by John Crowley, who named it for himself and his brother-in-law, James Crowley. The first store in the town opened its doors on October 15 of that year. In 1896, Crowley organized the first Baptist church in the area. He also built a sawmill and gristmill in the early 1900s to produce millstones for local brickyards. By 1920, Crowley had annexed territory from nearby Pineville and incorporated as a village. The post office closed in 1960 but has been reopened several times since then as a general store serving ZIP code 71336. In 1976, local resident Donnie Kropa donated over 4 acres of land to the town for use as a park which now includes a playground, baseball diamonds and other amenities.
