The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History in Central, Louisiana began with the creation of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Marines on September 1, 1951. The battalion was later redesignated as the 3rd Marine Division and became a unit of the Marine Corps Reserve on October 15, 1952. On November 4, 1953, the Marines deployed to Beirut Air Base as part of Operation Overlord. They served in combat for three months before returning home on December 10th. The 3rd Marine Division was reactivated on February 12th 1954 at Camp Pendleton, California and became one of two reserve divisions within the Marine Corps. In 1957, when marines were called to duty in Vietnam they again dispersed throughout Southern California with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion located at Naval Station Long Beach until August 1959 when they returned to Okinawa where they remained until 1965 when they went back stateside permanently. In 1970-1971 another detachment moved from Okinawa to Long Beach CA before being disbanded in 1973 because there were no more deployments for marine units due to budget cuts by then congressmen Nixon and Ford respectively who had come into office after Watergate hearings that implicated many members of both parties in coverups related to illegal White House activities during their terms in office including perjury charges against top aides Ehrlichman and Haldeman which led eventually to their impeachment proceedings. In 1990-1991 a detachment operated out of Camp Pendleton CA from 1991-1994 before being disbanded again due also to budget cuts which are still felt today among some marines particularly those stationed overseas who remember how difficult it was back then just try visiting central LA or any other major metropolitan area these days you will see many flag emblems flying everywhere but no marines present
