Central Louisiana is located in the southern United States. The area that makes up Central Louisiana was first settled by Native Americans. The French began to arrive in what is now Central Louisiana around 1692, and they soon established a parish called Catahoula. In 1718, the French created a new parish called Iberia which encompassed much of what is now Central Louisiana. By 1800, the area had become part of the Spanish Empire. After Spain lost its power over Latin America in 1808, France became the dominant force in Central Louisiana. In 1836, when Texas won its independence from Mexico, parts of what are now Central Louisiana went to Texas. In 1853, after Ulysses S. Grant was elected president, he decided to centralize all of America’s transportation systems so that goods could be shipped more easily from destinations such as New York City and Philadelphia to points near San Francisco and Sacramento California. This plan failed because it would have required building new roads and bridges across rivers and lakes Michigan and Missouri instead of using existing paths through these areas. In 1865, General James Longstreet announced his plan for Reconstruction in Alabama after the American Civil War ended. His plan involved pulling black people out of white-owned businesses so that they could be employed by the government or other organizations fighting for their rights during Reconstruction period (1865-1913). This idea was met with disapproval by many whites who felt that blacks were not able to contribute anything worthwhile to society and should be placed back into poverty like they had been before emancipation (1863). This led to violence between whites and blacks throughout Reconstruction period which left many innocent people dead or injured. In 1915, Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University—one of North America’s most prestigious institutions—determined that Baton Rouge would be his new home due to its location on a major artery running through North America:the Mississippi River Basin linking Chicago with Los Angeles on one side; Saint Paul on the other;and New Orleans on the Gulf Coast on both sides (Starks 2010). Shortly thereafter he purchased 477 acres east of downtown Baton Rouge from Jules Ferry for $15 million dollars making him oneof only two wealthy men everto own land contiguous with North America at this time (Farrelly 2009). Under Stanfords reign as governor of Arkansas from 1923-1928 he initiated numerous reforms including constructionof Hydroelectric Power Plant #1 adjacentto then Water Pollution Control Administration Buildingnow State Capitol Complex(Lopez 1988)). Central Louisiana was originally inhabited by the Cajuns. The area that is now Central Louisiana was first settled by the Iberian-African people in the late 18th century. In 1765, a group of Frenchmen and their Indian allies founded the colony of Acadia on the present day coast of Nova Scotia. After colonization, some Cajun colonists migrated to what is now Central Louisiana. Others arrived through charter ships from England in 1699 and 1700. In 1766, a group of British settlers named The Pilgrims landed onshore at Natchitoches and founded Baton Rouge. From there, small groups began moving into Central Louisiana over time. By 1800, most of what is today Central Louisiana had been annexed by France as part of the Treaty of Paris following its victory in the American Revolutionary War. The years 1800-1804 were difficult for New Orleans as it was under siege by British forces while Spanish troops defended Mexico City; however, this period also saw an influx of refugees from Texas who had fled Hurricane Andrew's damage in 1992-1993. This led to an increase in population growth in New Orleans which made it more challenging to accommodate all those living there simultaneously. As a result, Mayor David Gilmore decided to build a new city hall on Jackson Square outside of town so that city services could be administered more efficiently statewide and centralized government could be better organized with less added costliness for individual municipalities within New Orleans Parish. The new building opened in May 1998 and served as both headquarters for City Hall Services as well as housing for fire trucks and other municipal vehicles used throughout New Orleans County until 2003 when central government moved into its current structure at Opryland Park adjacent to LA Live Entertainment Complex).
