Central Louisiana is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. Central Louisiana is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie–St. Tammany Metropolitan Statistical Area. Central Louisiana was first settled by French colonists in the early 17th century. The area now known as Central Louisiana became part of the Spanish Empire in 1802. In 1804, Texas acquired most of what is now central and southern Louisiana from Spain as part of the Treaty of Moultrie; this region then became known as Mexican Tamaulipas. In 1835, Congress created Rapides Parish based on land west of New Orleans that had been ceded to France by Mexico during the Alamo War. The parish was named for General James Kenedy, who had helped lead American forces against Mexican forces near Bienville Pass in 1824 and 1830s. The town of Chalmette was founded in 1840 on rapids near where current Interstate 10 and US 90 intersect today; Chalmette served as a transportation hub for settlers moving into central and southernLouisiana during this time period. Additionally, several other towns were founded around this time including West Monroe (1842), East Monroe (1848),and Beaumont (1851). In 1865, when New Orleans seceded from France, Central Louisiana joined with Jefferson Parish to form Rapides Parish; through various annexations over time it grew to encompass all or parts of 11 parishes total at their peak population size in 1920: 2 million people living within its boundaries! A major economic center for much of this time period was Chalmette which saw an influx of cotton merchants traveling down I-10 to purchase goods produced southward along the Gulf Coast before American slavery began disappearing gradually beginning around 1820/21 according to one source while another suggests that cotton production did not really start until after slavery ended nationally starting about 1830 - thus making Chalmette something like a crossroads between slave labor areas along THE Gulf Coast and those outside OF NEW ORLEANS until very shortly thereafter! A third theory suggests that cacao beans actually started being grown hereabouts only after white plantation owners discovered them growing wild dates back to perhaps even BEFORE independence but nonetheless coffee beans continued being ground up hereabouts until about 1840? Anyway... Chalmette quickly became one OF THE LARGEST city roundabout IN CENTRAL LOUISIANA due largely to its burgeoning economy following sugarcane planting spurs new development throughoutalmost EVERYWHERE Else ELSE IN THE STATE ALSO SEEING INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS EVEN AS SLavery ENDED HEREIN...This MAKING CHALMETTE ONE OF THE BIGGEST CITY SQUARE'S IN ALL OF COUNTIES INCLUDING BATON ROUGE AFTER AMERICAN SLavery STARTED TO WIDEEN OUT NOT SO LONG AFTER Independence! Overall though industry slowly withered away hereabouts beginning around 1870& ensuing rural exodus & becomingLY more agricultural leading eventually TO THE PRESENT DAY POOR INTEREST IN INDUSTRY AMONGST MANY NATIVE AMERICAN CITIZENS TODAY!! Despite some VERY GOOD OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDUSTRY OVER TIME SOMEHOW THIS DID NOT REALLY HAPPEN... essentially because everyone who wanted it left once white men camealong & took everything away!). Today there's barely any manufacturing taking place at all beyond small scale agriculture despite attempts by some local entrepreneurs (& occasional developers)to resurrect some light manufacturing heavy industrial efforts over recent years however overall MUCH remains domestic services centric & FAR FROM ANYTHING resembling an “industrial corridor” anywhere nearby!
