The National Guard in Bossier City, Louisiana was organized on December 15, 1898. It was the first national guard unit in the state of Louisiana. The Guard originally consisted of men who had volunteered to join the military due to events such as World War I and the Spanish-American War. The Guards were not uniformed and wore civilian clothes at their first deployment. In 1916, a regulation was passed which required all guardsmen to be wearing uniforms at all times while on duty. This law also changed the name of the unit from “National Guard” to “National Police”. In 1941, Bossier City became an incorporated city and began having its own police department under Mayor Harry Whitehead. At this time, there were about 80 officers assigned to patrol for both municipal and federal agencies within town limits. The National Guard moved out of town in 1946 when it was decided that the police department would be more effective handling affairs with only a small number of officers available 24/7. In 1969, Bossier City again became an incorporated city when it amalgamated with neighboring Monroeville municipality. At this time, there were no National Guard units stationed within either city limits so they functioned as support organizations for local law enforcement departments instead. There are now currently around 50 officers assigned full-time to patrols within both municipalities combined (and additional Officers Auxiliary). On July 1st, 2007, Bossier City made history by becoming one of 18 jurisdictions in Louisiana which joined hands with counterparts from New Orleans Parish in forming the Gulf Coast Regional Command Center (GCRCC). The Louisiana National Guard was organized on November 15, 1867. The first Captain of the Guards was Major General John L. Steele of New Orleans. By 1865, the Guards numbered over 2,000 men and women in twenty-seven battalions. On December 5, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln called for a total soldier population of 10 million and 120 thousand soldiers to be raised throughout the Union. To this end, the Second Congress created an organization styled as "the Military Division of Louisiana" on October 25, 1866. This organization consisted of 1 infantry brigade (1st Brigade), 3 artillery brigades (4th Brigade), 4 cavalry brigades (5th Brigade), 1 marine brigade (6th Brigade) and 9 Marine detachments from various ports and states across America; also several companies from Texas and Florida under command of lieutenant colonel James Witherspoon Johnston who had been sent east to organize these units into field armies composed of four divisions each commanded by general officers: one division in Philadelphia under General George H. Thomas; one division at Richmond under General Ambrose Burnside; one division at Washington D.C., headed by Major General Nathaniel Prentice Johnson; two divisions near Chattanooga thenceforward quartered at Decatur Barracks until relieved by other divisions during the winter campaign." In 1870 Governor Carey established a Provisional State Guard Corps which numbered about 7500 men with headquarters in Baton Rouge but eventually served all over the state including Bossier City where it formed part of the Regular army garrisoning Fort Menard before being disbanded in 1881 when Louisiana became a Confederate state
The Bossier City, Louisiana community is located in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The population was estimated to be over 240,000 at the 2000 census. The city is home to the headquarters of the oil and gas company Koch Industries. The area has been inhabited by Native Americans for many years, and founded by French colonists in 1764. It became a slave-holding territory after the American Revolution and saw some of the worst violence in Louisiana during that time. Afterward, it experienced rapid growth as a center for cotton production and manufacturing before becoming an increasingly racialized and segregated place where African Americans were severely disadvantaged. These groups helped keep soldiers mobilizedduring peacetime until 1830 when Regular Army enlistments Begin againing citizens without military experience or skills (thus creating volunteer militias). At this point it was decided that regular troops should be replaced by citizen militia units called territorial guards if needed again during wartime – but this change didn’t happen until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded US soil! throughout these years different types of gifts have been given out including clothes, weaponry, foodstuff(s), postcards etcetera – all things which help encourage patriotism and support our Armed Forces! By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Bossier City.The town became a cotton center due to the production of cotton ginned cotton and other products that were exported from the town. In 1849, Governor John C. Breaux assigned Bossier City to be part of the newly created parish of Orleans. This gave the city status as a parish and allowed it to have its own government. Many businesses began to open up in Bossier City because they could get immunity from taxes if they belonged to an incorporated community within Orleans Parish. By 1860,Bossier City had a population of 4500 people and was one of the most prosperous towns in Louisiana. Unfortunately, this prosperity came at a price: slavery!Slavery was legal in Louisiana until 1862 when it was abolished by President Abraham Lincoln through Executive Order No. 646 . Slavery continued however, under military occupation until 1865 when General Joseph Ewing withdrew all United States troops from Louisiana

Polk, who had been appointed to that office by President James K. Polk.
