The Bossier City, Louisiana Army Garrison was established in 1802. The garrison served as a military installation and post of defense for Bossier Parish. The first commander of the garrison was Captain John P. Rockwell. In 1806, Captain George W. Dooley took command of the garrison and its area expanded to include present-day Bossier City and parts of Stroudsburg Township. In 1861, the Garrison was disbanded due to bankruptcy and its assets were sold off to pay off debts. It reopened in 1865 as an infantry regiment commanded by Colonel Nathaniel Denny with Headquarters at New Orleans. The Regiment saw service in the American Civil War from 1861-1865 under various commanders including Colonel James Fenton; Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Sprague; Major General James Hogg; and General John Crayburn until it was disbanded on April 15, 1865 near Corinth, Mississippi when Union forces captured it without battle. In 1903, the Garrison became part of Léonard Kravis Military Reserve District #2 headquartered at Baton Rouge which included units stationed at Shreveport (1893), Lafayette (1903), Alexandria (1905), Hammondsport (1907) & Monroe (1909). After World War II ended in 1945, all reserve duty activity within LKRMD #2 ceased except for a detachment responsible for Abrams Park at Baton Rouge from 1951-1975 when that unit became part of the Louisiana National Guard Bureau On October 1st, 2009 Governor Kathleen Blanco signed into law House Bill No: 8984 which provided for the reformation/reactivation of the Bossier City Army Garrison effective January 1st 2010 with headquarters located at 601 North Jefferson Street in downtown Bossier City with an initial complement of 350 soldiers including 100 civilian staff members . On January 1st 2010 Commander Colonel Michael J. Collins assumed command .

This large and growing city is made up of five locales: downtown, the business district around I-10, rural areas to the north and east, and a small enclave on Interstate 10 adjacent to Monroe County. The Bossier City area was settled in the early 1800s by French American fur traders. The region was named for Jean-Baptiste Bossier, a French general who fought in the American Revolution. In 1815, the United States purchased Louisiana from France and renamed it for General James K. Polk, president of the United States at that time. In 1836, an act to establish a government for the area was passed by Congress and signed by President Jackson. The town of Bossier City was founded on December 10, 1836, by Colonel Edwin M. Drake with assistance from white settlers and freed slaves. The town had a population of about 350 people. By 1840, Bossier City had a school and two churches. In 1850, cotton plantations were established in what is now Bossier City; these operations produced significant economic development over the next decade or so. By 1860, however, cotton production had died out and most businesses in downtown Bossier City were closed down due to lack of customers or competition from new arrivals such as railroad companies which began appearing in this area soon after starting up operations thereabouts. However, during Reconstruction efforts following the Civil War many African Americans ( Freedmen) found work as laborers on newly acquired white land north of Baton Rouge under contracts negotiated between Unionists and Confederates during that period; some also managed small businesses along roadside coves known as "cotton country." Negroes continued working in various capacities until after World War II when they became full citizens of their own nation within that same race/ethnicity group throughout much U.S., including present day Louisiana
The first white settlement in the area was a small group of Frenchmen who arrived in 1718. The town of Bossier City was founded on July 12, 1810 by Major Pierre Laclède and Captain Antoine Lafitte. It was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the U.S. Minister to France during President Andrew Johnson's administration. The city became an important transportation hub due to its location at the junction of two major road corridors, one linking Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and the other connecting Bossier City with Lafayette and Monroe County. In 1821, a store built by John Kirby opened in Bossier City which became a central point for goods going between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In 1827, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Bowen organized a militia regiment called the Louisiana Battalion to support Governor Claiborne Jackson's effort to suppress insurrections in Eastern Louisiana. By 1830, Bossier City had become home to over 1,000 residents and was listed as one of five townsLocated within Jackson Parish that were exempted from state taxes because they were part of what he called "the richest parish in Louisiana." During Reconstruction period (1865-1913),Bossier City experienced growth due to its role as a center for cotton production throughout East Texas and South Central Louisiana.
